IS BIG BROTHER WATCHING YOU DRIVE?
ROUTE 1984, CALIFORNIA
I recently received a letter from the California Department of Transportation (CA DOT). It began "Dear motorist..." and then went on to ask if I was driving on State Route 14 north of SR 138 and south of Rosamond at a certain date and time. If so, would I mind filling out the enclosed survey. Said survey included questions on the trip and other items, including household income. I've attached a copy. Oh yes, the letter informs me, all answers are "confidential." For the full text of the letter, click here
So what is this all about? An innocent survey to improve our transportation system? Some sort of intelligence gathering (the above location is in the Antelope Valley north of Los Angeles, near Edwards Air Force Base, the latter popularized in The Right Stuff as the US Air Force flight test center)? Or perhaps some rehearsal for even more surveillance of the citizenry of this land?
No doubt the way CA DOT got my name/address was by using surveillance equipment to monitor license plates on this stretch of road, then cross-indexing the plate numbers with the DMV data base.
This new intrusion must be resisted.
