Hello, I'm John... and I'm addicted to VW's
There, now that that is out of the way... And I've
started my twelve step program...
Welcome to my homepage.
Here with a little luck, you will find only the finest
in pictures, and links of Volkswagen drag racing on the Internet. The westcoast
is home to the Pro Racing Association and some of the fastest, and quickest
VWs in the world. If you have any vintage photos that you would like posted
on this site, send them to me and they will be posted with full credit.
Also, being a supporter of fast
street cars, I am constantly looking for the fastest
street
VWs to add to my page. So if your car is truly a
"Hot VW"
then send a good quality scanned picture of your car
with a
description of its build, time slip info, and I will
post it on this website. Thanks for dropping in, and enjoy!
Had a wonderful opportunity to attend the DKP -VW Paradise Drag Day
3 at the Carlsbad Raceway
last weekend, to run in the brackets and had an absolute blast!
The weather was great, there were tons
of faster than hell muffler cars there.. it was VW heaven!! My car???
It ran like crap, and I was only
able to get one pass off before eliminations, and at that it was
floggin really bad to even get a dial in
figured out. Had some problems with the setscrew for the points
had decieded to strip out on me, so
after a quick distributer swap I was up and running again... Seemed
to run ok for the first round. I
had to sandbag my dial in because i didnt know what the Green Weenie
would run. So I dialed in a 15.50 in
the lanes, and I raced Ron Rice who fortunatly for me cut a 1.03
light to my .530, so I had some room
to play with at the top of the track. I got out of it a bit to let
him catch up (I wasnt going to break out
like I did at the Las Vegas Bug In the last time I was there!) ,
and beat him in the beams. On the return
road, Ron and I shook hands, and then I thanked him for loaning
me his spare distributer (He did laugh by the way.) Second round the car
ran ok at the line, and the limiter and was working like it should
have
been... My opponent and I staged, and we ended up getting
burned down from the starter, because
they didnt get the car numbers up in the tower and so we had to
back out, and restage. I took a look
at my oil temp, and it was allready at 180 when I staged at the
first beam... I was a little peeved to say
the least I can see getting burned down from the guy I was racing,
but NOT the damn track!! Well,
anyways we staged finally and there still seemed to be a delay before
they were dropping the lights...
after oh about ten seconds, the lights finally came down and I got
the green light. About half track the
guy next to me that was dialed in at a 12.30 had allready caught
up to me so I knew he had caught a
redeye at the start. So this was my chance to get a full pass to
see what I can dial in for the next round..
so I stayed into it, and just after hitting the top of 3rd gear,
it fell on it's face with the ignition crap again.
So much for that idea. Well, I needed to let it cool off as much
as I could, so I just drove right back into the
staging lanes (Hoping for Muffler Mike to follow hehe) to let it
cool off. Hell, I figured the car is
running crappy anyways, may as well make, or break the day now!!
Well, Mike pulls up behind
me (imagine that?hehe)and the motor finally cooled down, and we
get called to stage. With my car
running crappy all day, I knew that if I stood any chance to beat
Mike, I'd have to do it in the lights.
I ran my dry hop, and waited for him... we stage, and the tree comes
down... I got the big freakin
redeye!!! He won by default, and when I get to the time booth, the
guy shakes his head, and says
"thats about what a half of a nat's ass looks like to me!!"
and hands me the time slip... a very hard lucked .499, on a .500
light! I got a big smile on my face,
and left because that's about as close as a screwup that you can
get to being perfect! I can live
with that one for sure! Overall had a great ime, and it was a real
blast to finally run the car again
down the track. So now it's back to the garage as I wait for my
MSD distributer to come in the mail...
And then there will be something else to fix next time! Looking
forward to the next Drag Day!!!
One very coolthing to note... It is time to pray to the Bug In Gods...
There seems to be some very serious consideration right now to hold
a
full blown VW Bug In event at the Pomona Raceway next April. So
serious in fact there is going to
be decible testing at Pomona Raceway at the end of the month to
see if it would fall within city
ordinances, so keep your fingers crossed... VW drag racing just
may be back in SoCal
My Gawd... this is a sickness for sure!
I ended up taking the car out again this weekend to the Pomona Street
Legal Drags at the Fairplex,
and I had a really great time. Got only a few passes on the car
since there were 499 other cars
that decided to show up as well, but it was a very sucsessful day
for sure. The weather was warm,
and the air wasnt very fat (this is Pomona we're talkin about) and
I had to run my antique
muffler for the sound testing for the possibly upcoming Bug In and
I still netted a
13.69, and a 13.74 both @ 97.10 mph!! I was only hoping to run a
low 14 at best because the last
time I took it to Brotherhood Raceway, the best there was a 13.92
before 2nd gear fell out of it on
the 4th pass. This was a very pleasant suprise due to all of the
ignition problems I've been
having as of late. I was only hoping on getting some seat time at
the track, and try to iron out the
MSD poop, and I ended up with 2 solid back to back passes. The other
part of the great day was
that I got to meet and pit next to long time VW drag racer Llord
Mosher
(of Little Giant Killer fame- see Racecar section)
while he was trying to sort out a new motor/trans combo in his Manx
buggy. It was a little
overwhelming with my lil 13 sec car (he was trying to crack off
a 10.90 with his 2300), but he
was such a personable guy that it didnt matter if you had a 17 sec
squareback... he was still
interested in how you were doing and offered any advise if he saw
it might help (I'm still
contemplating to up the compression from 7 to 1, to 9 to 1 for a
couple of tenths!). After the
race he invited me to his shop to check out the nitrous system for
the buggy, and I could'nt
resist. Lloyd showed me his collection of memoribilia from the days
of the Bug In's, as well as
alot of bench racing from the day. It was a real treat, and a huge
bonus to an already great day.
If you ever get a chance to, stop by his shop in Upland and say
hello- you'll be glad you did.
