Nutcrackers
History & Myth
Nutcrackers were first created hundreds of years ago by the miners of the Black Ore Mountains in Germany a region also
referred to as the Eregegirge. In their spare time they carved nutcrackers out of wood. Subjects were men of wealth,
royalty and government. Nutcrackers are meant to ward off evil and protect one's home from evil, thus the reason they
have mean expressions. Female nutcrackers are not traditionally created because they do not have mean
expressions.
Today we find nutcrackers are designed for strictly decorative reasons, thus they are not meant to be useful for cracking
nuts. Most are designed after famous and infamous people in history, nursery rhymes, mythical creatures and of course
legends.
Christian Steinbach is one of the traditional designers of nutcrackers from Germany along with Christian Ulbricht. The ballet
The Nutcracker Suite, by Pyotr Ilyitch Tchaikovsky, was composed to tell the story of one such nutcracker owned by a little
girl.
