Pine Island, Florida
xxxxxxxxxx
The Cabbage Key Inn is situated on a 100-acre island in the northern portion of Pine Island sound. The island from which the inn takes its name is accessible only by boat. The inn and its signature Dollar Bill Bar are the centerpiece of the resort that covers the entire key. The inn itself is perched atop a 38-foot high shell midden that dates from the time the region was dominated by the Calusa tribe of Native Americans. The roads are sand and there are no autos on the island to ply them. Life here slows to the pace of tropics.
The Cabbage Key Inn is known far and wide as a preserved piece of Old Florida that offers unmatched hospitality. The restaurant in the inn is a favorite with anglers chasing snook, redfish or tarpon in Pine Island Sound. The signature lunch is composed of cheeseburgers and cold libations. The Dollar Bill Bar gets its name from the dollar bills signed by patrons and pinned to every available inch of the wall.
Shaggy's Harbor Bar & Grill
Pass Christian, Mississippi
Like virtually everything else along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the Pass Christian Small Boat Harbor was raked by the winds of Hurricane Katrina back in 2005 and inundated by the tidal surge of the storm. Overlooking that anchorage, Shaggy's Harbor Bar & Grill suffered a similar fate, being virtually leveled. Although it took almost two years, the local watering hole finally reopened in the fall of 2007.
Once again it is possible to climb to its second floor location, enjoy a wide range of menu items from the sea or standards like burgers and wings. On the deck you can nurse a cool drink while gazing over the harbor or looking out to the Mississippi Sound beyond. Whether for lunch, dinner or just a libation, Shaggy's Harbor Bar & Grill is a must see on the Magnolia State coast.
Cumberland Falls State Resort Park
Corbin, Kentucky
xx
Situated on the shores of the Cumberland River in southeastern Kentucky, the state park lies in the midst of the Bluegrass States best trout and smallmouth bass country. But that is not the feature that has attracted world-wide acclaim. Rather it is the waterfall on the Cumberland that plunges powerfully over a 60-foot drop. In the process it is the only such fall in the western hemisphere and one of only two in the world to produce a "moonbow." After dark around the time of the full moon each month an eerie pale arch forms over the water running downstream from the plunge pool at the foot of the waterfall. For years Cumberland Falls have been known as the "Niagara of the South."

Overnight visitors to the park can enjoy accommodations at the DuPont Lodge in the resort park. Built by Civilian Conservation Corp workers during the Great Depression, the lodge offers 51 comfortable rooms. All rooms were completely renovated in 2006. The lodge is located in a rustic setting surrounded by beautiful Cumberland Plateau scenery and 17 miles of hiking trails. Meals are available onsite at the Riverview Restaurant.
