Propers, Readings,
Bios
At some point in the early summer of
2006 I wrote a reflection on one of the people whose lives were
commemorated on one that date as one of the Lesser Feast
days. I was so captivated by the story, I spent some
time paging through the Lesser Feasts Lectionary, reading the bios
with the accompanying prayers and Scripture readings, totally
enthralled by the amazing and wonderful people I encountered there.
As a child, most of the saints
we studied in school were ancient martyrs
(with a very heavy emphasis on the Virgin Martyrs
who were supposed to be inspirational for the girls in
particular). Those gruesome stories turned me off on "official"
saints for a long time. In recent years,
my spiritual journey has brought me increasing awareness of the importance of the
Communion of Saints. Being curious to explore both the ancient "traditional" saints and the modern saints whose
lives and work are commemorated in the Lesser Feasts, I began intentionally writing reflections on the Lesser Feasts.
This project has rather taken over my life, but
I am having way too much fun to
stop! I may not have time or energy to write every one of
these folks on the first pass, but in coming months and years, I hope
to pause to reflect on the lives of most of the saints we celebrate.
