During the summer months, enjoy sailing at the sail club (no membership needed) located about 1 mile down the beach. Just walk in and rent a kayak, katamaran, laser or other small boat by the hour. Or you can rent a windsurf board or paddle boat from a guy on the beach. And I have yet to try this but people take day trips around the lake on a kayak, stopping for a picnic lunch and a nap on one of the secluded beaches. It takes about 4 hours and some strong arms! Or just swim off the beach - the water is clear and clean and pleasantly warm between June and the end of September. And there are no motor boats, water skiers or jet skis to disturb the peace.

The first photo below is the town center beach seen from the port area. Beyond this is a long beach depicted in the second photo, which is close to the apartment. These photos were taken in March 2002.

Heading into town ....

Adjacent to the promenade is the main square.
The archway is an entrance to the Centro Storico,
with its narrow streets and stone stairways. From
there you can climb up to the ruins of the medieval fort.

A lamp-post on Trevignano's main street is convenient when a fisherman needs to mend his nets....

Need to do some food shopping? There is a newly remodelled supermarket less than 5 minutes walk away, with a freshly-baked bread and deli counter.




Not a beach day? The center of the village is only 10 minutes walk along a delightful lakeside path. There is a bus service to Rome and a train service from Bracciano or Cesano, not too far away. Also, a ferry operates from April to September between the three towns around the lake. And there are some wonderful lakeside and countryside walks for both the energetic hiker and the rambler.




If you have a car, which is recommended for getting the best out of a week or two's stay, you can drive to the other side of the lake to visit the castle in Bracciano; have a lovely dinner at one of many restaurants (grilled fish from the lake is delicious) and then go back for a stroll around the castle that is now bathed in floodlights. And maybe you still have some room for a gelato :-)




Beyond the shores of the Lago, you can drive east half an hour to the medieval town of Calcata, perched on a massive rock and now an artist colony. Explore the Etruscan tombs in the cliffs nearby. Or in the other direction, visit the Cantina at Cerveteri and bring home some superb local wines. Drive west a half hour to the Mediterranean beaches. Or just go roaming in Rome.




Want to explore further afield? Trevignano is superbly placed as a jumping-off point - less than an hour and you are in Tuscany or Umbria. The possibilities are almost limitless.

It really is a magical place. We are sorry we can't get there ourselves more often. At the end of a day of relaxing on the beach, shopping in Rome, sightseeing locally, or day-tripping to Tuscany or Umbria, there are few things sweeter than to sit on the balcony with a glass of local white wine and watch the sun go down behind the hills across the lake ....
