Leucaena's power for sustainable development is based on it's multiplier effect. Leucaena Has Tremendous Potential For Sustainable Development As A Component of Sports Adventure Tourism
Leucaena can grow in temperate climates. Some of the places in the USA where it could be useful to develop experimental Leucaena projects:
Please let me know if you are intersted in a Leucaena project in one of these areas. Email to honducopa@yahoo.com.
Leucaena is a fast growing
nitrogen fixing tree with many uses. It originated in Central
America and grows well in many places in the tropics. It fixes
nitrogen gas from the air and make its usable to itself, plants
and animals. It is extremely valuable to the
environment. With its many varieties,

Leucaena can produce nutritive forage and livestock feed (especially good for beef and dairy cattle), goats and water buffaloes.
It has multiple uses and is suitable for firewood, timber, charcoal, fence posts, and rich organic fertilizer. Its diverse uses in the tropics includes use in tropical reforestation, revegetation of steep slopes and eroded hillsides, shade and nurse trees for tropical crops and as an ornamental plant. Leucaena grows in both the tall type and a short shrubby type. It is widely used worldwide for livestock feed - grazing, dried and in cut and carry systems.
In addition, many agricultural, canewood and forestry projects in developing countries should include Leucaena as a nurse crop, fertilizer or green manure. ISAI's Leucaena Supported Project Information Center gives developing country entrepreneurs the knowhow to use Leucaena for many small, medium and large scale project. CLICK HERE for information on the Leucaena Production Book. Order it and other publications here.
However, Leucaena's greatest potential is for sequestering carbon against global warming and climate change. It is a responsibility all businesses in the 21st century must take - saving our planet from global warming and climate change. Fighting global warming is the superordinate goal of ISAI. The ISAI Entrepreneurial Culture is the Global SAT community we are developing. This SAT community will dedicate itself to profitable, sustainable development.
Sports Adventure Tourism (SAT) is one of the highest profit centers for bringing in foreign exchange in the world. The International Sports Adventure Institute (ISAI) is using Leucaena in all its Sports Adventure Tourism projects as well as in dedicated plantations.
It will also be of great benefit as a carbon sequestering intercropper for farms in the tropics. Please join with the Leucaena Production Society to promote Leucaena for this life saving approach that may save our very lives by halting global warming.

Since there is so much interest in Leucaena for biomass energy, livestock feed, bioremediation, we have set up a special Leucaena Information Center where we make available summaries of research findings and economic studies from many countries like the USA, India, Australia and others.
Please submit your questions, comments, articles, research findings, etc.

The Leucaena Production Society suggest the planting of nonhybrid forms of Leucaena. If indigenous people are to control their Leucaena projects, it would be better to accept lower yields, develop locally system of Psyllid resistant plants. Hybrid plants will require that small scale producers purchase expensive. patented germplasm and cannot save seed or increase their plantings. This entire issue of hybrid seeds is presently questionable even in the USA for garden vegetables and field crops.

Our goals are to replant our planet for carbon emissions amelioration, empower low income people, small scale farmers and develop sustainable ecodevelopment systems. Thus for our purposes, only varieties where people can save seeds, use these seeds in community building projects and develop consortiums based on their empowerment can be promulgated by LPS.

While higher yields and better resistance may be obtained from hybrids, the Leucaena Production Society is supporting on-farm research and this selection of Psyllid resistant plants within ecotones or local area. We are seeking to develop self sufficient ecologically sound communities. Communities need to be able to save seeds, increase their production and the growth of trees. In addition, carbon sequestration is a vital component of the LPS projects. Thus we will be planting the old tried and true K-8, K28 and others and selecting from on-farm projects resistant trees for seed production. These selected seeds will then be distributed to all our participating farmers. In addition, we will be seeking sources of naturally occurring germplasm in Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.
However our work in the field of Ecodevelopment is not an area where we will using the hybrids. We are dedicated to ecodevelopment, empowerment of people, sustainable methods, people to people activities as well as community building. For this reason, we are using varieties of Leucaena that can be controlled by the communities that use them. Many of the populations we will be working with are not highly technical and people controllable systems of development must be used.

I think we all remember what happened to small scale farmers when the Green Revolution came. Those with more resources were able to obtain the new inputs, have greater yields, and eventually freeze poorer farmers off their lands. It ended up exacerbating the problems of poverty. Our Leucaena outreach methodology is designed to take the all important species to the poorest of the poor. Therefore they must be empowered to save their own seeds improve their crops and serve as partners with us in our research efforts.

These are projects and environments suited for the new hybrids and varieties of Leucaena. There is a place for cutting edge research. In highly competitive projects, in intensive livestock farming, in energy projects, in projects managed by highly educated and sophisticated project managers, these new varieties may be meaningful. We welcome the use of Leucaena in any form.
For example, ISAI is pioneering Leucaena Effect Agroforestry and the use of large scale multi project Rural Agroindustrial Centers (RAICs). In such project, we will be using a variety of hybrids and new cultivars. We are experimenting presently in Honduras with hybrids for a Rural Agroindustrial project to go into Jesus de Otero, Honduras.

Leucaena Based development is the LPS's contribution to sustainable development for developing country communities. As a result we will work side by side with farmers, professionals, scientists, universities, governments and environmentalists to develop sustainable Leucaena based development systems.

The Leucaena Production Society recognizes the environmental crisis we are facing on our planet. It is time to change our ways. Planting Leucaena, sponsoring Leucaena tree planting projects, are all part of LPS's contribution to stopping Global Warming. We invite you to participate in Ecospiritual activities for the purpose of helping ensure we all survive the coming crisis. By planting trees, we can halt the buildup of greenhouse gases while we develop better systems for our cars, our factories and our homes.

We are growing Leucaena in Arizona from locally available trees. These Leucaena were originally imported for ornamental use. However, we have selected from trees that grow here for use in tropical highlands.
Temperatures in Arizona's Maricopa County will vary from 120o F in the summer to 26o F some nights in the winter. Yet our Leucaena trees survive. We have selected from these fastest growing trees that have survived this temperature regime and make them available to you at these prices:
Leucaena seeds are available from these Arizona populations. Order Leucaena seeds today by emailing to Exportfacs@aol.com. Seed buyers must make direct bank transfers into our account in order to purchase seeds. Email for bank transfer details. More information on Leucaena is available to you from Exportfacs@aol.com.

Latin America's future with Enviroadventure is inexorably tied up with agriculture and forestry. Only with the development of natural foods and tree planting with Leucaena, will the Western Hemisphere Enviroadventure Culture come to pass. More information soon. Dr. Carol Cross will be relocating to Honduras in January 2005 and will open the LEEAF Institute.
