Description

Small species (typically 25mm-28mm). Dorsal coloration light green with numerous small yellow spots scattered throughout. Iris coloration gold, at times with small dark pigmentation scattered throughout. Tympanum not evident. Extensive webbing between fingers III-IV. Transparent venter and parietal peritoneum, thus allowing for the observation of the viscera. Organs covered in white visceral lining.

Distribution

Southern Mexico, through Central America, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, and Surinam.

Habitat & Ecology

Nocturnal, riparian (found in the vegetation above and near streams).

Reproduction

H. fleischmanni reproduces during the rainy season by depositing their egg masses normally on the underside of leaves hanging directly over the moving water below. The males of this species establish territories along streams, at times defending them against intruding males with physical force. The advertisement call of H. fleischmanni is a short high pitched rising whistle.

Conservation

Status: Not Listed, but habitat destruction threatens amphibians worldwide.
