Suretka Glass Frog

Taylor, 1958
  • Class: Amphibia
  • Order: Anura
  • Family: Centrolenidae
  • Group: Fleischmanni

Description

Small species (typically 25mm-29mm). Dorsal coloration is light green, often with tiny white-yellow spot scattered throughout. Iris gold, rarely with small dark spots. Extensive webbing between fingers III-IV. Venter and parietal peritoneum transparent. Heart lacking pigmented parietal pericardium, thus being red upon observation. Other organs covered in white lining.

Distribution

Costa Rica, Panamá, and to 3° 45´ N in western Colombia, below 300 m elevation.

Habitat & Ecology

Nocturnal, riparian (found in the vegetation above and near streams).

Reproduction

This smaller species reproduces during the rainy season in the vegetation overhanging streams. The eggs are deposited typically on the undersides of leaves directly overhanging the moving water below. The males of this species establish territories above the stream, and on most humid nights during the reproductive season produce high pitched trill advertisement calls similar to the sounds produced by some crickets.

Conservation

Status: Not Listed, but habitat destruction threatens amphibians worldwide.
