Nomenclature of the Dead Sea Scrolls

Naming Convention

4QDana

4Q = Cave Four (4) at Qumran (there are 11 caves in total)

Dan = Name of the document (Daniel)

a = Each copy of the document (a = first copy, b = second, etc.)

There are two naming conventions. The method above incorporates a ‘popular’ name, but each is also assigned a number—which makes possible the listing of unidentified documents. Where possible, I've shown this notation in parenthesis. In this example, the document is also known as 1Q71.
