Here I am, day 28. I'd been on my own now since Bartlesville, OK, four days earlier when Tom continued ahead and I took a rest day. Outside Alton, MO, as I crested the top of one of the endless rollers, there was this guy (Billy Johnson) with his little girl (Linsey) sitting on a log by a driveway, with a huge glass of ice water. He invited me over, and after chatting for awhile, and a false start toward Alton, he offered his front yard for my tent, and the use of their shower. I'd heard about road hospitality before, and would find it more than once on this trip. |
