Comments: Hi Inferno,

Just found your website after I tried to install Ripper on my New PC for the 3rd time in 6 months!

I originally purchased the game for my old NEC 486 PC, which it worked ok except very slow & jumpy!

I then upgraded my PC a couple of years ago to a home-built 800Mhz PC built by a work colleague which was nothing but trouble! Ripper would not work on this PC.

I now have a E-machines 610 2.6Ghz PC which is great, but again, Ripper does'nt like it!

I was hoping you could send me Ripper1.03 patch so I can see if I can get the bugger working. Did'nt get past the 1st Disk on my old pc but I love this kind of game. Shame they dont make them like this any more. I also used to love Tex Murphy although never got to play Pandora's. Phantasmagoria was good too. Don't suppose you know any others like this I may be able to get my hands on?

By any chance have you tried to get Lucas Arts' Full Throttle to run on an XP system? I should add, with sound? There are several games in that generation that are real peaches, and my neighbor, new to PC's and Adventure Games, would love to play them -- but his machine came with XP (which is terribly unfortunate in the case of many games).
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks much,

Comments: I have installed Zork Nemesis in the default directory. I have a P3 system with XP. Recently I downloaded the graphics from your site. How do I install it ? On opening the archive the files are installed to two directories and znemesis.exe is installed to the parent directory.

As you have mentioned in your site, I extracted all the files to the zork nemesis directory (C:\Program Files\Activision\Zork Nemesis). Two new directories Install and Addon were created. On running setup from the install directory, it aborted saying that zork nemesis is not found on the hard disk.

Please help me.

I love your site, specially the melody at the welcome page. It's so melancholy...

I'm writing to you because I would know if you found a solution to run Phantasmagoria 1 on win xp. The game works, but audio is disturbed.
I searched for help in your XP compatibility page but there is nothing about Phantasmagoria.
So I tried Dos-box latest version (do you know it?) and the sounds are excellet exept sometimes there are audio and video skipping...
Please, answer me anyway, thank you very much.

Comments: Hey Inferno,

This is a great website you have here. I just wanted to let you know that I was able to get Zork Grand Inquisitor (DVD version) to run on my Windows XP Professional computer by using the extra help file for Zork Nemesis that Mordack sent you. I was having the exact same problem where it wouldn't recognize the disc. I copied the files over and edited the Inquisc.zix and Inquis.zix (I wasn't sure which one to change, so I did both) in the same manner as in Mordack's walkthrough. After that everything works smoothly. I also had to put on compatibility mode for Windows 95 because it would crash on startup as it was. Hopefully you can add some mention of this somewhere on your website so it can help others who want to play this great game. Thanks again for your work on the list.

I have a Dell laptop with a Samsung CDRW/DVD SN324B drive and after downloading and installing VDMSound (the 2.1.1 version), I am unable to launch the game Ripper as DOS does not seem to recognize my CDROM drive. The driver that is installed is a Microsoft Driver 5.1.2535.0 digitally signed for Windows XP 7/1/2001. Obviously I can't proceed with the 2nd pitcher of margaritas until I can get the resolved. Comments: Hi,

I chuckled a bit at your web site. I have found that I go back and replay many of the older games. You are absolutely correct in that many of those games are worth the effort to get running under XP.

I have been wrestling with "Are you afraid of the Dark?". Can you send me whatever steps you have worked out so far? Using "compatability mode" and playing with the virtual memory has allowed me to start the game, but I have no sound, and intermittent lockups (usually during a "movie" sequence). I am trying to figure out the workaround for the Soundblaster requirement, and the VBE test.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The net is full of the greatest !§&%! i've ever seen, but if you need a patch for a game, which wasn't cheap in 1995, there is no location to go to.
With a little bit luck the patches should fix the sound problem i have in RIPPER - it seems to be played twice in a minimum timeshift, so you can't understand what they say.
Thank you for your efforts ...

Comments: Excellent site. I'm playing all of my old games again, thanks to you. I had one query, and it's obviously not of earth-shattering importance, but the link to the icons for Ripper doesn't work. If you could send that to me, that'd be phenomenal, but no rush. You get better first, that's the important thing.

Comments: Ack! Sorry about the double signing. And let Victor from Morrisville, NC know that Star Trek Borg is VERY playable under XP, all you need is the patch for it, available at So far, however, all of my attempts to play its sister game Star Trek Klingon have failed miserably. General protection fault, my ashtabula. Anyway, hope he reads this.
