CD Version

If you have the CD version of Zork Grand Inquisitor then the instructions below will allow you to play the game completely from your hard drive. No cd will be needed in your cdrom drive.

note*: If you are playing on Windows XP or Windows 2000 you can download a DOS command file here which will install, copy, and edit all the necessary files you need to play the game. However, it will not work on Windows 95/98/ME. In that case you should follow the instructions below.

Insert CD1 into your cdrom drive. If autorun is enabled you will see the install screen appear. If the install screen does not appear Go to Start --> My Computer --> Your CDROM --> Right Click --> Choose either Explore or Open. Then double click the setup.exe file.
Install the game to the default location: C:\Program Files\Activision\ZGI

Choose the maximum install option (125 MEGS) when prompted.

After the installation, with CD1 still in the CDROM Drive:

Go to Start --> My Computer --> Your CDROM --> Right Click --> Choose either Explore or Open.
Locate the ZASSETS1 Folder and Right Click --> Choose "Copy".
Copy the ZASSETS1 Folder from CD1 to the ZGI Folder on your hard drive. To do this Right Click the ZASSETS1 Folder icon -->Choose "Copy".

note*: The ZGI FOLDER on your Hard Drive may be located by going to Start --> My Computer --> Local Disc "C" --> Program Files -->Activision -->ZGI. or C:\Program Files\Activision\ZGI.
Open the ZGI Folder which we've now located on your hard drive by Double Clicking the folder icon.
Right Click anywhere on a blank portion of the newly opened window and choose "Paste". The ZASSETS1 Folder is now "copied" to the ZGI Folder on your Hard Drive.
Right Click once again inside this ZGI Folder. Select "New" --> Folder. Rename this new folder: ZGI (that's right, the same name). Double Click on this newly created ZGI Folder to open it. Leave it open.
Go back to your CDROM Folder (If you had closed this folder, simply Go to Start --> My Computer --> Your CDROM--> Right Click --> Choose either Explore or Open. ) Double Click the ZGI Folder icon on CD1.
Locate the ZGI_MX Folder and Right Click on it. Choose Copy.
Go back to your newly created ZGI Folder on you Hard Drive. Double Click to open this ZGI Folder .

note*: The new ZGI FOLDER on your Hard Drive may be located by going to Start --> My Computer --> Local Disc "C" --> Program Files -->Activision --> ZGI --->ZGI. or C:\Program Files\Activision\ZGI\ZGI.
Right Click anywhere inside this folder and choose Paste. Your ZGI_MX Folder is now copied to your newly created ZGI Folder.

note*: at this point, for any computer novices, I would close out of all windows back to the Desk Top to avoid confusion.

Insert CD2 into your CDROM Drive. Go to Start --> My Computer --> Your CDROM --> Right Click --> Choose either Explore or Open.
Locate the ZASSETS2 Folder from CD2. Right Click on this folder and choose --> Copy.
Go to --> Start --> My Computer --> Local Disc "C"--> Program Files-->Activision --> ZGI.
This is the main ZGI Folder. Right Click anywhere on a blank portion of the newly opened window and choose --> Paste. You should now see a folder named: ZASSETS2 as well as a folder named: ZASSETS1 and one named: ZGI.

Inside this Main Folder you will also see a file named inquis.zix. Right Click on the inquis.zix file and choose Open with ---> Notepad.

The first portion of your Inquis.zix file looks like this:

Edit the file by replacing CD0 and CD1 (in the last 17 lines shown above) with DIR.

The first portion of the edited file should now look like this:

After editing this file you must "save" it to protect the changes you just made. Click File ---> Save.
Then close Notepad.
Close out of all windows back to your Desk Top.

You can now remove CD2 from your CDROM Drive as you will no longer need it. You are now ready to play the game! Go to Start --> All Programs --> Zork Grand Inquisitor --> Play Zork Grand Inquisitor
