Adding Reef Points

Recently we added a set of reef points to sails for our Thistle dinghy and Catalina 27.

The gallery below shows the reef patches and points added to our Thistle sail.  For those of you unfamiliar with the Thistle, it is a light boat with lots of sail area.  We wanted our kids to learn to sail without fear of capsizing, so we added points to an old sail.

The cost of the project was minimal.  For adding reef points to two sails we spent less about $75.  This included 2 yards of 5 oz Dacron sail cloth, spur grommets for the Thistle sail, double sided tape, and the grommet setting tool.  We already had on hand V-92 and V-69 Dacron UV resistant thread and 110 / 18 needles for the machine.

The first project went so well, we also added a second set of reef points to our Catalina 27 mainsail.  This, plus the removable inner stay we have added, greatly enhances our sail handling.

To add reef points, we needed to add tack and clew patches, cringle patches and install grommets. This is the clew patch.

Laying out the patch. After cutting it to size and shape, we used two sided tape to hold it in place while sewing.

We use a Singer 327K for all of our canvas work. It is one of the last all metal sewing machines with straight and zig zag stitches.

The biggest problem sewing large projects like sails is feeding all of the fabric through the machine. Sometimes a little help is necessary.

Notice that we have the sail rolled tightly to fit under through the machine. The only difficulty was preventing the roll from hanging up.

Laying out the cringles.

We used a variety of supports while sewing.

This was one of the best arrangements. Plus, using the kitchen table provides incentives to finish!

A few of the lines of stiching were just a pain to get at.

To make perfectly round holes for the spur grommets (with sealed edges), we began by cutting a hole a few millimeters undersized and ...

using a heated pipe nipple, we fused the edges and made the hole round

Sailmaker's Supply had a good price on gommet setting tools. a few hammer blows and the grommet is set.

The completed reef points.
