Since the 1840s, ornithologists and birders have recorded 431 species of birds in Wisconsin.

A revised version of the checklist has been published - see
  • “Annotated Checklist – The Birds of Wisconsin” by William P. Mueller and Cindy Kowalchuk. The Passenger Pigeon, Journal of the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology, Vol. 71, No. 3, Fall 2009, pp.239-281.

The checklist contains status and abundance codes, and will be updated periodically. Wisconsin's newest species have been officially added to the list of birds seen, including species first seen during the last few years: Great-tailed Grackle, Rock Wren, and Green-breasted Mango.

This Annotated Checklist for Wisconsin now includes a list of
species of "disputed origin", and a list of hypothetical species, which were not previously included.

This version incorporated nomenclature and sequence changes that existed as of spring 2009, and which were mandated as part of the updated Check-list of North American Birds, published by the American Ornithologists' Union (AOU). If you would like to access the North American Check-list, and find additional updated changes, see it on the AOU website, at:
