IGLIHA Elections

IGLIHA's Constitution provides for a Board of Directors that is comprised of Executive Officers and Regional Representatives. Whereas the Regional Representatives serve to represent the views of their member organization(s) within the IGLIHA umbrella and keep their regional members informed of IGLIHA activities, the Executive Officers are responsible for the day-to-day and administrative functions of IGLIHA.

The Executive Officers are elected by the general membership of IGLIHA to one-year terms, while the Regional Representatives (two per region) are selected by the IGLIHA membership within each respective region.

Nominations for a position must be made at least one week before an announced election; nominations will be accepted during a six month period prior to an election. Positions that are vacant or not filled by means of an election may be appointed by majority approval of the Executive Committee if ratified by the Board of Directors.

The election process is administered by an Elections Committee chosen by the Executive Committee. Candidates who have accepted nominations for the Executive Committee positions are ineligible to be members of the Elections Committee (unless no one else is available to serve on the Elections Committee).

Commissioner Jeff Kagan
(nycpucks_AT_aol.com)
New York, New York
I am the Director and Co-Founder of the New York City Gay Hockey Association. In the past four years I have been instrumental in turning the NYCGHA into the largest gay hockey organization in the United States. NYCGHA now supports six teams of recreational and developmental players and hosts an annual tournament, the Chelsea Challenge that draws over 100 skaters from all over North America. I have also initiated numerous fundraising efforts to bring in a steady stream of revenue for the NYCGHA's operational budget.

My other ice hockey-based activities include serving as the NY Rep-M and as an IGLIHA Board Member since 1998 and attending more than 15 IGLIHA sanctioned tournaments in the past 7 years in the U.S. and Canada.

I am also the Vice President and Co-Founder of Out Of Bounds (oobnyc.org), a non-profit umbrella organization that supports and promotes GLBT Sports and Recreation groups in the greater New York area. Other sports-related activities include co-producing the 2003 annual dance/expo event called Sports Ball which this year raised over $15,000 for the 30 participating sports and recreation organizations. From 1999-2003, I served on the Board of Directors of Team New York.

In June 2003, I was the recipient of the AOL Time-Warner Andrew Heiskell Community Service Award for my volunteer work with gay & lesbian sports issues; I manage a monthy sports party called Balls Boards & Blades which focuses a different GLBT sports organization each month, raising awareness and money (an average of $500 per event for the participating organization).

I am interested in the position of Commissioner of IGLIHA as I would very much like to implement innovative strategies for the promotion and growth of the organization and will work hard to assure that it is more active and interactive with the growing number of gay hockey leagues throughout North America. My experience in New York has successfully focused on increasing the visibility and awareness of the NYCGHA on a national level and this, coupled with the broad range of experiences that I have with gay and lesbian sports will benefit IGLIHA, gay hockey, and GLBT sports as well. I promise to make every effort to incorporate and utilize the resources, knowledge, and talents of all the cities and organizations to our maximum advantage.

Joined the LA Blades as a novice in 1991 and participated in the initial founding of IGLIHA in 1992 in Montreal; co-founded the Gay & Lesbian Sports Alliance of Greater LA; founded the Blades' second team in 1993; competed in NY's Gay Games IV; re-founded Team Seattle's hockey club in 1995 and organized the first Slide for Pride hockey tournament; participated in the 1998 resurrection of IGLIHA; competed in Amsterdam's 1998 Gay Games; served as IGLIHA's Ass't Commissioner (1998-2000); attended Federation meetings in Seattle, Montreal, Berlin, Johannesburg, and Vancouver as an IGLIHA Federation Rep (2000-2003); and served as Tournament Director for Ice Hockey in Sydney's 2002 Gay Games.

I would like to continue to serve on the Executive Committee and provide continuity within IGLIHA. As Recording Secretary, I will continue to post meeting minutes (as I've done since 1998) and endeavor to keep a record of official IGLIHA business. My priority for the next year is to establish a workable dues structure and membership roster.

I am the co-founder of the Green Mountain Gay & Lesbian Hockey Club of Vermont. We are better known of as The Vermont Pioneers. I started my involvement with GL hockey back in 1995 when I joined the Toronto Gay Hockey Association. I quickly became a big fan of GL hockey and through my involvement with the TGHA and GL Hockey have met many close friends and even my civil union spouse.

GL Hockey has been a rewarding experience for me and I would like to see it grow in smaller cities and towns all over the world. Shortly after joining the TGHA I became involved in its executive for three seasons and together with some very talented individuals gave rise to the Toronto Friendship Tournament, which I was involved in during its first three years.

I spent a good deal of time bringing Toronto and IGLIHA to the internet. I feel communication and outreach are two of the most vital aspects for IGLIHA to focus on in the coming months. IGLIHA needs to serve as a foundation from which small clubs can be promoted and developed. I believe IGLIHA needs to take an aggressive approach to co-ordinating tournaments and would like to see an IGLIHA tournament take shape over the next few years. This would provide clubs from all over the opportunity to host tournaments and ensure that those tournaments were developed with the common goal of providing a positive and fun experience with less emphasis on profit.

Former regional rep for IGLIHA to the Minnesota/Wisconsin area. Co-founder and inaugural past-president of the Twin Cities Gay Hockey Association. Member and delegate to the Gay and Lesbian Athletics Federation. Past co-chair to the American Express Financial Advisors GBLT employee network. Board member and treasurer to the One Voice GBLT Mixed Chorus of the Twin Cities, a GALA Choir.

I am excited to serve as a FGG rep for IGLIHA. I am set to participate in the annual convention of the FGG in Chicago. I have a working relationship with many of the board members of IGLIHA and will affirm to bring our concerns to the FGG to advance our organization's participation.

If you are interested in any of these positions, email the Elections Committee Chair, Andy Winsett (andrew.winsett_AT_comcast.net), or any (or all: IGLIHA-EXECS-L@lists.rpi.edu) of the Executive Officers for more information.
