POOL PARTY - Posted 13 October 2002

"Prawn on the Barbie" Ice and Pool Party, Sunday, 3rd November (6.00pm-8.30pm)

All ice hockey participants and their guests are invited to join us for an 'ice and pool party' on Sunday evening. The party begins at the Canterbury Ice Rink at 6.00pm, in conjunction with the final game of the day. At the conclusion of the day's competition, the ice will be opened to participants for a free skate (no pucks allowed) until 6.45pm. Admission to the rink from 5.45pm until 6.45pm is free for those affiliated with the Gay Games (show any participant credential or Gay Games ticket).

Concurrently, the party will shift next door to the Canterbury Pool complex at 6.30pm. With two pools and more, we'll serve up meat, prawns, salads, bread, drinks etc etc., with everything fresh. Of course, there is nothing like having a prawn (not shrimp) cooked on an Aussie BBQ.

"I reckon it will be a great evening and one that I will most definitely not miss."

In addition to the food and facility, there will be a number of team contests, leading to the presentation of the "Survivor: Australia" award. These will include events such as "best-dressed" participant (use your imagination, you're in Sydney!), icebreaker contests, and immunity challenges.

Admission to the Canterbury Pool facility is AUS$5.00 per person or AUS$50.00 per team (all rostered team members added to a guest list), including food and beverage. Team payments are due at the Saturday 'Team Captains Meeting', while individual tickets must be reserved in advance through either a team contact or the Competition Committee.

Take the CityRail train to Campsie Station (alternate choice is Canterbury Station) and walk 1 km to the pool. The pool is situated right next door to the skating rink (see Transportation for directions).

OFFICIAL RULES - Updated 03 November 2002

The following represent the Official Rules for Ice Hockey. Changes from the 09 October 2002 rules were announced at the Team Captains Meeting held at Noon on Saturday, 2 November 2002, at the Canterbury Ice Rink (see Transportation for directions).

Official Rules for the Sydney 2002 Ice Hockey Tournament

  1. The game of Ice Hockey in New South Wales is played under the rules and regulations of International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), the Australian Ice Hockey Federation (AIHF), and the New South Wales Ice Hockey Association (NSWIHA).
  2. The current playing rules of the IIHF Rule Book apply, unless otherwise stated herein.
  3. NSWIHA carries the sole responsibility for the conduct of all officially sanctioned games of Ice Hockey in New South Wales.
  4. The New South Wales Ice Hockey Association (NSWIHA) will provide interpretation of the IIHF rules, with guidance from the International Gay and Lesbian Ice Hockey Association (IGLIHA).
  5. For the duration of the tournament, all participants must be registered with NSWIHA. The fee associated with NSWIHA registration is included in your tournament registration fee.
  6. Each player must submit an AIHF/NSWIHA membership application and a statement with respect to their not being indebted to a club nor under suspension.
  7. All team officials (managers, coaches, trainers, etc.) who will be on the bench during games must be registered in the NPO (Non Playing Official) category in order to be covered by insurance during games. They should also complete the same forms as players and clearly mark such forms as 'NPO'.
  8. Any participant found to have supplied incorrect registration particulars will be immediately suspended from the tournament until such time as the Competition Committee deems appropriate.
  9. All participants (players and NPOs) must be at least 18 years of age at the commencement of the tournament.
  10. The minimum number of players that can be registered as a team is 11 and the maximum is 20.
  11. All players must be listed on official team sheets (OTS), in numerical order by jersey number. The OTS must be signed and submitted by a designated team repesentative at least 15 minutes prior to each game. Only rostered players and NPOs can be listed on the OTS, and only registered individuals listed on the OTS can participate on the ice or bench during the subject game. Symbols will be used on the OTS to indicate following: "G" - goaltender; "C" - team captain; "A" - alternate captain; and "*" - starting line-up.
  12. No players, other than goaltenders, may be added to a roster after a team's initial OTS is submitted. Goaltenders may only be added to a roster in the event that a team's primary goaltender(s) are unable to continue play due to injury or other circumstance. Non-rostered goalies can only be added following approval of the Competition Committee.
  13. A player must participate in at least one round robin game to be eligible for a medal game.
  14. A designated team representative must check and sign the game sheet within 10 minutes of the end of each game. Failure to do so will signify concurrence with the accuracy of the game sheet as signed by the officials.
  15. For each game, there will be a scheduled 10 minute warm up session. If the tournament is running behind schedule, the warm up session may be shortened, but in no case will it be less than 5 minutes.
  16. For each game, intermission between periods will be 2 minutes.
  17. Each round robin game will consist of two 15 minute running time periods and a third 15 minute stop time period.
  18. Each medal game will comprise one 10 minute warm up session and three 15 minute stop time periods.
  19. If the score differential in any game exceeds 10 goals, running time will be in effect.
  20. The duration of a minor penalty shall be 3 minutes if assessed during running time or 2 minutes if assessed during stop time.
  21. The duration of a major penalty shall be 7 minutes if assessed during running time or 5 minutes if assessed during stop time.
  22. The duration of a misconduct penalty shall be 10 minutes.
  23. During round robin play, two points will be awarded to the winner of each period with an additional 2 points awarded to the winner of the game. Where tie games or periods occur, the two points will be split between the teams. The maximum points a team can earn per game are eight: two points for winning each of the three periods and two points for winning the game.
  24. Should teams be tied in the standings following completion of round robin play, tie-breaker criteria will be applied in the following order:
    1. Head-to-head game record
    2. Head-to-head point standings
    3. Most wins
    4. Largest overall goal differential (Goals For - Goals Against)
    5. Fewest Goals Against
    6. Most Goals For
    7. Fewest penalty minutes
    8. Coin toss conducted under authority of the Competition Committee in the presence of a designated representative from each involved team.
  25. The outcome of each medal game will be determined solely by the goals scored during the game. If, at the end of regulation, a medal game is tied, "sudden death" overtime periods (15 minutes of running time) will be played until the team that scores the next goal becomes the winner.
  26. Each team is allowed one 30 second time-out per game.
  27. In the case of a penalty shot, the game clock will be stopped until the penalty shot has been taken. The referee will inform both benches and the goaltender on the procedures for a penalty shot.
  28. All protective gear including shin guards, shoulder, elbow, and pants padding must be worn by all players.
  29. Mouth guards are strongly recommended for all players.
  30. Helmets must be of a type approved by the IIHF.
  31. Female players must wear an approved full face cage/visor and neck guard when on the ice.
  32. Male players must wear an approved half or full face cage/visor when on the ice. Neck guards for male players are strongly recommended.
  33. In-line (roller) hockey gear is not safe for ice hockey and is not permitted.
  34. Every member of a team must be dressed uniformly in respect to the colour of their jerseys (goaltenders excepted). The Referee is authorised to refuse entry to the ice for any team member that is not uniformly attired.
  35. If the Referee determines that the jerseys of competing teams are too similar, one of the teams will be directed to change their jerseys in accordance with criteria established by the Competition Committee.
  36. Slapshots are allowed in all divisions.
  37. Automatic icing will be called.
  38. Two line passes are permitted.
  39. A no checking rule will apply in all divisions. Checking will result in a minor or major penalty.
  40. A player receiving a game misconduct penalty in the last half of the third period, or any overtime period, is automatically suspended for the next game.
  41. Fighting is not allowed. Fighting will result in an automatic game misconduct penalty.
  42. Severe or flagrant penalties shall result in automatic match penalty and may warrant a hearing by the Competition Committee with potential expulsion from the tournament.
  43. Any player(s) who has been expelled from the tournament, or has not completed serving a tournament suspension, shall be duly reported to the Federation of Gay Games and IGLIHA for consideration of further disciplinary action.
  44. "Home" and "Visiting" teams must use their designated benches.
  45. During the first overtime period, teams will defend the same goal as they did during the second period.
  46. A maximum of one overtime period will be played. If the game remains tied after one overtime period, the game will be decided by a shoot-out.
  47. In the event of a shoot-out, each team will designate five players who will alternate taking penalty shots. The team with the most goals after five shooters shall win the game. If each team scores the same number of goals, the game will go into a "sudden death" shootout with five additional shooters designated by each team. If the score remains tied, the first five players will shoot in their original order, followed by the five additional designated shooters. The shoot-out will continue until one team scores and the other doesn't.

Rink - Updated 05 October 2002

The entire Sydney 2002 Ice Hockey Tournament will be staged at the Canterbury Ice Rink. Canterbury is an Olympic-sized rink (60m x 40m). As with all rinks in New South Wales, the rink has high boards and no plexi-glass (spectators are protected by a netting system. Secure equipment storage will be available at the rink for the duration of the tournament (Sunday through Friday).

The rink has two internal change rooms and one set of showers. Two additional change rooms and a set of showers are being brought in for the tournament and placed adjacent to the rink (rubber matting allows skates to be put on in the change rooms prior to entry into the rink). Home teams will be assigned to the internal facilities, while visitors will use the external facilities.

For photos and information on the various rinks in New South Wales, including Canterbury, please see Rinks.

Transportation - Updated 14 October 2002

The Canterbury rink can be accessed via a 20-minute CityRail train ride from downtown Sydney (either "Canterbury" or "Campsie" stations on the southern leg of the purple line) and a 5-minute walk to the rink.

NOTE: An eight-day "Green* TravelPass" (not Purple) is included with your registration, so the train ride is free for participants during the Games (as are all train and bus rides within the "Green* Zone", along with Sydney ferries)!

* Unlimited travel on CityRail services in the area bounded by Bondi Junction, Kogarah, Kingsgrove, Regents Park, Bankstown (via Lidcombe or Sydenham), Epping, Chatswood stations and Olympic Park; Sydney Buses in zones 1 to 7; and Sydney Ferries (except JetCats before 7pm).

A secure facility will be provided at the rink for each team's equipment.

NSWIHA Affiliation - Updated 20 October 2002

Each player will need to be registered with the New South Wales Ice Hockey Association (NSWIHA). No other affiliation will be required (i.e., neither USA Hockey nor Canadian Hockey Association registration is necessary).

The NSWIHA registration fee is included in the Sydney 2002 registration fee; no further payment is required. The two forms required by NSWIHA are now available for download in Microsoft Word format: AIHF Member Affiliation Application and NSWIHA Self-Clearance.

Officials - Updated 23 September 2002

The New South Wales Ice Hockey Association (NSWIHA) will provide on-ice officials for the tournament. Nevertheless, NSWIHA will welcome IGLIHA-affiliated officials to augment their officiating crew. On-ice officials will receive payment per standard NSWIHA rates (alternatively, on-ice officials may opt for Volunteer classification). Officials can register online at the Sydney 2002 website.

There will be three (3) on-ice officials for each Medal game, with all other games officiated by a 2-person crew. (On-ice officials who are also participating in the tournament will not officiate within their own division.)
