On February 1, 1861, Texans voted 46,153 to 14,747 to secede from the Union. When Governor Sam Houston, the hero of San Jacinto, refused to take the oath of loyalty to the Confederacy, he was deposed and replaced by Lieutenant Governor Edward Clark in the governorship.
