NORTH CAROLINA
On May 20, 1861, North Carolina became the 10th State to secede from the Union. Between 1861 and 1864 the North Carolina General Assembly authorized the printing of over 25 different types of State issued currency totaling more than 20 million dollars and ranging in varying denominations between 5 cent and $100. Most North Carolina State issued notes are found with plain backs however some notes were printed on the back of both recycled and unissued bonds and currency due to the severe shortage of paper during the War.
