MISSOURI

Missouri proclaimed neutrality while the other Southern States were seceding, but the neutrality was broken when Union forces under General Nathanial Lyons arrested the Missouri State Militia at their encampment near St. Louis. Lyon's army then proceeded to Jefferson City, forcing the State government under Governor Claibourne Jackson, into exile. This began a civil war between the Missouri State Militia and the Union army. Governor Jackson and the Missouri government retreated to the town of Neosho in the southwestern corner of the state and on October 31, 1861 adopted an Ordinance of Secession, voted $10,000,000.00 for defense and authorized the issuance of defense bonds for that amount. . On November 28, 1861 the Confederate Congress passed an Act admitting Missouri as the 12th state of the Confederacy. Most State of Missouri issued notes are uni-face or plain back, except for the $20, $50 and $100 defence bond currency, which have ornate backs. It is also common to encounter State of Missouri notes that are printed on the backs of unissued bonds or notes, due to a severe paper shortage during the War.
