Willis Slavens

Willis Slavens headstone. After the war, Willis married Mary Agnes Ragan, whose family lived a few miles southwest of North Salem in Marion Township. Mary's parents passed away three years after Willis and Mary's marriage, and the couple settled on the Ragan farm and took in Mary's younger siblings. They had one daughter, Della, born 11 May 1870. Willis continued to farm the former Ragan place for many years, until ill health related to his Civil War service forced him to cut back. "Uncle Willis," as his obituary in the North Salem paper called him, died 26 Feb. 1924, outliving his wife by nearly 30 years. They have a large stone just inside the gate at Fairview Cemetery.

Della Slavens married Ralph Trotter and had three children, Mary Helen, born 1898; Maurice, born 1900, and Frank H., born 1902 or 1903.
