Hoping to continue their success with the Mamas and the Papas, Steppenwolf, The Grass Roots, and Three Dog Night, in 1969 Dunhill Records signed a solid little pop/rock band simply named Smith. Smith played and recorded mainly covers of pop and soul songs and made the top ten with a remake of "Baby It's You," a previous hit for Motown group The Shirelles. The first album, entitled "A Group Called Smith," was consistently good, featuring three lead singers -- Gayle McCormick being the primary vocalist. The 1970 follow-up "Minus-Plus" was an equally fine album and included the chart singles "What Am I Gonna Do" and "Take a Look Around." Gayle left the band soon thereafter and began her solo career.

"A Group Called Smith" was reissued on the Varese Saranbande label in 1995. The reissue
adds five bonus tracks: "Take A Look Around" and "What Am I Gonna Do," Gayle's solo
singles "Gonna Be Alright Now" and "It's A Cryin' Shame," and Smith's version of "The Weight,"
which orginally was included on the "Easy Rider" 1969 soundtrack album.
