Credit by Examination - CLEP

The College Level Examination Program ( CLEP ) is administered by The College Board, which also administers the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Their article Assessing your Readiness for a CLEP Exam is an excellent starting point.

Brief exam descriptions are also available online, but more detail can be found in The CLEP Official Study Guide 17th ed. While this book is an excellent resource for those who plan to take several CLEP exams, it is by no means sufficient preparation for all xx tests. If you are ordering study guides for individual CLEP examinations, you may want to rely on the summaries in those books, but be sure they are reasonably current.

Many people prefer the Princeton Reiview's Cracking the CLEP 4th ed. Although specifically designed for the CLEP General Exams (which have been discontinued) it is still a good comprehensive review. We expect an updated edition to be available soon.

Here's a tip that is generally overlooked: Most of the CLEP exams cover the same material that is in the corresponding AP programs. Since many publishers have opted not to publish two essentially identical books, you should also consider AP materials.
