Two children discover a mysterious Snowman-- “a song and dance man” who smokes...

May Day Workshops
with In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre
Help Build the Puppets for the Parade!
During the month of April, our building is transformed into a giant studio where staff artists and volunteers create the MayDay Parade.
Workshops are free and open to the public.
How it Works:
- An artist will introduce you to the parade theme by showing you the giant storyboard (a visual script).
- You select a section of the parade to work on, find the artist in charge of that section, and set to work!
- Artists will guide you.
- You can either make your own creation which you can keep after the parade, or help with the larger parade floats.
- Typically, you'll need 3 or 4 sessions to complete a project, but you can come to as many or as few as your schedule allows.
- Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.
- Wear "painting" clothes.
- Bring recycled items (if you can): small plastic tubs with lids, brown paper bags, newspapers, fabric, sheets, latex paint, bamboo, scissors.

Lovesick Sea Play and
Ode to Walt Whitman
By Janaki Ranpura
and Bart Buch
In the Heart of the Beast's guest artist series begins October 16 – 18 with a double feature of Janaki Ranpura’s Lovesick Sea Play and Bart Buch’s Ode to Walt Whitman.
In Lovesick Sea Play, Janaki Ranpura combines powerful physical acting with shadow puppets and light play to tell a pirate story on the stormy seas of the North Atlantic. Can our two seafarers find love, or at least love what they find? Recommended for ages 18+.
Bart Buch’s Ode to Walt Whitman is a tender, silent puppet-poem that uncovers contemporary queer cultural identity alongside an exploration of Whitman’s love and dreams of America. Within the confines of an online gay chat room, an intimate dialogue takes place between Whitman’s Leaves of Grass poems and Federico Garcia Lorca’s poem Ode to Walt Whitman. This multi-media performance features a dazzling array of puppet forms as well as live organic electronica music performed by Adam Booka, improvising on a score by nationally recognized local musician Martin Dosh. Buch performs with three other puppeteers; Ramon Cordes, Adam Collignon, and Kevin Long. Recommended for ages 18+.

Workshop: How Puppets Keep Technological Theater Charming
By Janaki Ranpura
How can puppetry take advantage of common forms of technology without losing its charm? Participants will play around with ways to enhance puppetry's allure with "technological" accents, such as video cameras, monitors, and cell phones. Our goal is to explore how we can preserve the charm of the live puppet experience while wrangling with some of the possibilities of technology. If possible, participants should bring any video cameras, digital cameras and laptops. The class will also experiment with cell phones, so bring those too. You don’t have to have these things, but if you do please bring them along.
