For a Time Such as This
by Michelle Storm
directed by Laura Wilhelm
marionette design by Kurt Hunter

Estrella, an elderly church custodian, falls asleep late one night over the pages of a worn Bible. In her dreams, she encounters Esther, a lost Jewish orphan-girl in search of her cousin, Mordecai. Estrella follows Esther through time and history, into 6th century B.C. Persia and the immense, maze-like palace of King Ata-Xerxes. Within, Haman, advisor to the king, plots to kill Mordecai along with all Jews. With Estrella’s help, will Esther find her escape from the harem’s confines and fulfill her potential as her people's savior? This play is a stylized coming-of-age story and an intimate inter-faith dialogue. (A rod marionette is used to portray on character in the play.)

May Day Workshops
with In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre

Help Build the Puppets for the Parade!
During the month of April, our building is transformed into a giant studio where staff artists and volunteers create the MayDay Parade. Workshops are free and open to the public.
How it Works:
- An artist will introduce you to the parade theme by showing you the giant storyboard (a visual script).
- You select a section of the parade to work on, find the artist in charge of that section, and set to work!
- Artists will guide you.
- You can either make your own creation which you can keep after the parade, or help with the larger parade floats.
- Typically, you'll need 3 or 4 sessions to complete a project, but you can come to as many or as few as your schedule allows.
- Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.
- Wear "painting" clothes.
- Bring recycled items (if you can): small plastic tubs with lids, brown paper bags, newspapers, fabric, sheets, latex paint, bamboo, scissors.

April 5 - May 1, 2008
Saturdays, 9 - 11 am and 1 - 3 pm
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6 - 9 pm

Donations graciously accepted, always welcome, and much needed.

Punch and Judy
by Freshwater Pearls Puppetry

The real thing! Learned first-hand in England, Professor Freshwater's Punch and Judy Show is a traditional puppet farce with a modern sense of humor and Freshwater Pearls' sweetly rowdy style. Diane's ties to British puppetry show in her swift and masterful technique. She is adept with the "swazzle," the traditional instrument for Punch's voice. Children find it hilarious! Stu's genial "straight man" rapport and marvelous, live hammered dulcimer playing complete the magic. Presented as a part of the Landmark Center Urban Expedition series' Great Britian Day.

Projection & Puppetry Workshop
With Laura Heit

A hands-on exploration of puppetry and object performance combined with live video projection. Have you ever wanted to show an intimate moment between two puppets close up? To be able to show the audience what’s inside Punch’s pockets? Video cameras can be our eyes on stage, inviting the audience into small spaces and giving new weight to miniature gestures. This workshop will focus mainly on using video projection to add texture, landscape, motion, close-ups, and details to your performance, and in some instances expand both the size of your audience and the scale of your work. We will discuss using film language to expand the limitation of live theater, and begin with a screening of work that has incorporated film/video into live performance, as well as films which play with “live” and animated puppetry. The second half of this workshop will be a fast-paced, hands-on exploration in which all participants will have the opportunity to use and experiment with live video, video projectors, simple animation, and puppets.
