Invigorate the Common Well
Episode #1 Come to the Well

When Water is Frozen
March 2 - 25, 2007

By In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre

This unique three-episode performance series brings us together to give thanks to Water as we grapple with issues of water quality, quantity, and ownership.

From “Out of Order” to “Flowing with Beauty and Generosity”
Through the emblematic action of restoring the Avalon Theatre’s defunct public drinking fountain, we call for restoring the health of this invaluable, irreplaceable global resource. Each episode features mini-performances, installations and a hands-on “lab” of practical actions and questions, as well as ideas for community advocacy.

Grounded in the science -- yet flowing with the spirit -- of Water, Invigorate the Common Well is a theatrical and civic experience that will inform and inspire all ages to stewardship and action.

How to Turn Distress into Success: A Parable of War and Its Making
by Bread and Puppet Theatre

With the help of the National More-More-More Society the Student of Success is taught a lesson: how the transformation of distress into success transforms success. The Population is a child in the arms of Truth. But Truth gets employed by the Executive to ready the Population for war. War is leaned in a butcher’s shop. The dance of the Collateral Damage Dancers concludes the lesson. The puppets are from cardboard; the music is live and includes an ancient Georgian chant.

May Day Public Workshops

Help build the puppets for In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre's May Day Parade.

How it Works:
An artist will introduce you to the parade theme by showing you the giant storyboard (a visual script). You select a section of the parade to work on, find the artist in charge of that section, and set to work!

Artists will guide you. You can either make your own creation which you can keep after the parade, or help with the larger parade floats. Typically, you'll need 3 or 4 sessions to complete a project, but you can come to as many or as few as your schedule allows.

Other Details:
Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.
Wear "painting" clothes.
Bring recycled items (if you can): small plastic tubs with lids, brown paper bags, newspapers, fabric, sheets, latex paint, bamboo, scissors.

ANIMO
by Improbable Theatre

UK/Minneapolis (U.S. Premiere)

A newspaper morphs into a swan, a bristle brush becomes a swamp creature, and a slew of characters are born before your very eyes during this spot-on, on-the-spot evening of improvised “chaos magic.” Improbable Theatre (Shockheaded Peter, 70 Hill Lane, Spirit, and The Hanging Man) transforms the everyday into the sublime. Founders Phelim McDermott, Lee Simpson, and Julian Crouch team up with local musicians, puppeteers, and performers to create a special Minneapolis version of their everinventive, object-theater experiment ANIMO. Eschewing a script, set, or any such formal structure, the company animates a range of everyday materials and found objects during an hour of completely unique improvised theater. Care to take part? Call 612.375.7624 for complete information on workshops.

A Prelude to Faust
Created adn directed by Michael Sommers

Sept. 28 - Oct. 21

A Prelude to Faust, created by Michael Sommers, inspired by the Faust plays of Goethe and Marlow,is a contemporary view of these classic texts.
Designed and directed by Michael Sommers, with score written by Michael Koerner, this work is ideally scaled to the new Open Eye Theatre and will showcase not only the unique style of Open Eye, but introduce audiences of all ages to an art form unlike any other on the Twin City stages.
Sommers has created parallel worlds of puppetry and a psychological landscape of imagery and object manipulation. The puppetry world centers on the adventures of Kasper (based on the traditional Kasper puppet) as he follows Dr. Faustus’ path to be confronted by the ultimate choice of a pact with the devil.
The psychological world is conjured through the “Everyman” examining the consequences of his actions as he seeks a path to freedom and fulfillment. A Prelude to Faust is an exploration and visual meditation on the concept of “the final deed”.

Transylvania Television
Created by Gordon Smuder

TVTV, or Transylvania Television, is a situational comedy about dysfunctional misfit monsters trying to run a TV station. Set in the darkest corner of Eastern Europe in the fabled land between the forests -- Transylvania -- the show features an all-puppet cast of incredibly appealing characters that turn the traditional monster stereotypes on their heads. And send Halloween cliches running for the hills!
This is a puppet sitcom FOR GROWN_UPS! That's why we're on at Midnight.
