"Punch and Judy meets The Who." —New York Times

After instigating teenage riots to change the voting age to 14 and dosing Congress with LSD, 24-year-old rock singer Neil Sky is elected president. In this multimedia puppet-theater rock-opera (based on the 1968 exploitation film Wild in the Streets), which sharply satirizes the hippie generation and the end of the psychedelic era, an idealistic movement left unchecked becomes the same fascistic tidal wave its young protagonists fight against so unstintingly. Experience the McGuire stage transformed into an intimate 120-seat puppet-theater installation conceived by conceptual artist Dan Graham with videos by artist Tony Oursler. Features live music by post-punk duo Japanther and marionettes by Phillip Huber (Being John Malkovich).

GOTAMA: A Journey to the Buddha

Place:  Heart of the Beast Theater

Price:  $15

A wealthy pampered prince wanders outside his palace and meets, for the first time, the old, the sick and the dead. Moved by profound compassion, he decides to throw away his worldly ways and sets off on a quest to experience, understand and, ultimately, overcome the curse of suffering.

Thus starts the heroic journey of Siddhatta Gotama, the young man who, in search of his own humanity, becomes the Buddha.

The prince's story is narrated by Channa, his bumbling but well-meaning charioteer (played by local favorite Julian McFaul). Comical Channa's own, very human, journey towards enlightenment helps make GOTAMA a universally accessible tale of spiritual awakening.

Blending traditional Asian and cutting-edge puppetry, physical theater, dynamic scenery, and live, original music, GOTAMA features the puppetry of HOBT Artistic Director Sandy Spieler, designer Masanari Kawahara, and San Francisco shadow puppeteer Janaki Ranpura. GOTAMA marks the directing return of Seattle's Andrew Kim whose previous Twin Cities productions, "City Rhapsody" (HOBT) and "Passage" (Theater Mu), earned him the City Pages' 2001 Best Director Award.
