H.U.M.A.N. gives an opportunity for girls confined in the juvenile justice system to document their lives and experiences using visual art. Through collage, painting, photography and graphic design, they reflect on themes such as friendship, loss, abuse, sexual violence, hope, freedom, identity, death and their dreams for the future. Classes are taught twice a week at the Spectrum detention center in Dorchester (Boston), MA. Once released, they have the opportunity to attend a graphic arts workshop (HUMAN Design) in the community. The girls receive training in art and design, including computer software like Photoshop and Dreamweaver, while earning a stipend and money from commissions. If you need any design such as a logo, poster or website, please consider hiring us for the job!

The program is taught by John Ewing, Kate Jellinghaus and Minotte Romulus and the executive director is Francine Sherman. HUMAN is associated with the Juvenile Rights Advocacy Program (JRAP). JRAP programs incorporate the voices of the girls they serve and strive to empower them to promote equity and justice for all system involved girls.

We currently have an excellent collection of artwork to exhibit. If you have or know of an exhibition space please contact us!
