On Sunday morning (January 20, 2002), I was driving to Kula from Kaanapali and I witnessed an unbelievable site. There was snow on the summit of Haleakala. It was the first snowfall in a decade. The snow was 5 to 6 inches deep at the summit. Snowfall was also reported at the ranger station (7,500-foot elevation). The sky was clear and I decided to check out the crater. My first stopped was at Kula Sandalwoods for Eggs Benedict. Continuing toward the crater the traffic stopped around mile marker 10. It took over one hour to enter the park. When I got to the summit the clouds came in and it began to rain but this didn't stop the crowd. Upon leaving the park around 3:30 p.m., we counted over 170 cars waiting to enter the park.
These photos were taken on Sunday afternoon.
On the following day the summit was clear and I took the following photos.
