HAWAIIAN MUSIC GUIDE

Hawaiian singers have produced some of the most memorable songs. We all remember Don Ho and Tiny Bubbles.

Contemporary Hawaiian singers have not let us down. Here are some of the best writers and singers of today's Hawaiian music.

REMEMBER BUY DON'T BURN (CD's)

Keli'i Kaneali'i (left) and Barry Flanagan (right) are HAPA.

In 1993, HAPA released the smash hit album with the same name. HAPA has out done themselves again with their 1997 release, In the Name of Love. If you can not afford to buy all of their CD's, check out Collection (their greastist hits, released in 2000).

To see a list of HAPA releases (albums with songs) from Coconut Grove Recording Co. and The Mountain Apple Co. CLICK HERE.

I was fortunate to attend the above concert by HAPA. It was an exhilarating experience. The music was spectacular. They do not need any of that modern recording studio gimmicks to improve the sound.

HAPA is back and complete with a web site click here.

During the rebirth of HAPA Barry Flanagan released a solo album called Instrumental Peace (not Piece).

Nathan Aweau (above) and Barry Flanagan are the new HAPA.

Keali'i Reichel

Keali'i Reichel, a well-known Kumu Hula (master hula instructor), was an immediate success with his first album, Kawaipunahele. His coolest album is Melelana. You put the CD in the computer and watch what happens.

For a list of releases (albums with songs) by Keali'i Reichel and Punahele Productions CLICK HERE.

Dr. Aloha searched for a long time and he finally the offical Keali'i Reichel web site (click here).

Ernie Cruz Jr (guitar) and Troy Fernandez (ukulele)

Ka'au Crater is located in the Palolo Valley, home of Ka'auhelemoa.
Ka'au Crater Boys are Ernie Cruz Jr (guitar) and Troy Fernandez (ukulele).

For a list of releases (albums with songs) by the Crater Boys and Roy Sakuma Studios CLICK HERE.

My favorite album by the Crater Boys is Making Waves. Listening to the Crater Boys makes me want to go back to the islands. Too bad they broke up. Ernie Cruz Jr released a solo album called Portraits (winner of the 2002 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards for Island Comtemporay Album of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year).

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole

IZ
(May 20, 1959 - June 26, 1997)

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole was one of the few pure Hawaiians living today.
With his 'ukulele always by his side, IZ produced the sweetest music which would bring tears to your eyes.

To learn more about IZ (a tribute to the man), his life, his music, CLICK HERE.

His classic songs included Hawai'i 78 from the album Facing Future and E Ala E from the album E Ala E.
IZ was truly the one and only Hawaiian supa (super) man.

For a list of his great albums (with songs) CLICK HERE.

Kelly Boy

Kelly De Lima is Kelly Boy. This guy can play the 'ukulele. Get his album Jus' Kelly Boy. The album starts of with a cool Hawaiian chant. I heard his remake of Tears of a Clown and I had to get the CD. For a list of the songs CLICK HERE.

Sean Na'auao

When I listen to this guy, it makes me want to go to a luau. I get this craving for lau lau, lomi salmon, poki and tripe stew. For a list of his releases (albums with songs) CLICK HERE.

Along with Fiji, BET, Baba B and O-shen, you can hear Sean on the Island Warriors CD (2000, Hobo House on the Hill Records)

Kupa'a
Iokepa Niles, Erland Pahukoa, Kimo Niles

Kupa'a is a new local group from Maui. They just released their first album ³There's a Time for Everything². In January 2003, they had the number one song on Maui's KPOA. I saw them play live at Borders and they autographed the CD cover.

We should be honest and not cheaters.

Jake Shimabukuro

Sunday Morning
2003 Na Hoku Hano Hano Award for Instrumental Album of the Year
2003 Na Hoku Hano Hano Award for Favorite Entertainer of the Year

Dr. Ahola was fortunate to hear the world's greatest 'ukulele player in concert. Jake has performed in Japan, New York, and California. Dr. Ahola attended one of three sold out performances at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. The event was unbelievable and now I know why he wins the awards. If you have a chance to hear him play, go.

I was having dinner in Maui and I thought I saw Jake having dinner with a group of people at the adjacent table. I said ³Jake²? He came to my table, shook my hand and we started talking. I happened to have his CD and he signed it.

Jake is a really cool guy. He is friendly and not stuck up like other entertainers.
