Tax Shacks Appear In November
They Can and Will Steal Your Tax Refund
And Disappear in March or April

Local Kissimmee 'Tax Shack' Mr. Bill's Taxes Raided by Feds

Which tax preparation service you choose makes a BIG difference.

By the time this makes news the proprietors are out of town with their clients' tax refunds, social security numbers and more. Every year around November these 'tax shacks' appear overnight. In Orlando, it was the same group of people who changed the name of their business every year because of the illegal activities they engaged in. Here's what they were doing:

1. Using their tax prep services to fill their own accounts by direct depositing the refunds to their own accounts.

2. Charging ridiculously low rates advertised at $49. Then when the client's refund is shown to be say, $3500, they would tell the client that the refund was $3000 and they would keep the extra $500. for themselves. This method motivated them to artificially "pump up" the refund with fictitious entries. The client is left holding the bag later when the IRS determines that they weren't entitled to a tuition credit or didn't have this dependent.

3. Using the tax preparation services as a vehicle to 'steal' the social security numbers of the children which are often more valuable than all the refunds they could steal from their clients.  Choosing a tax preparation service is one of the most important decisions you will make, you don't have to choose the big box tax prep services, but make sure that the one you do choose has not sprung up overnight as the article below describes of Mr. Bill's tax prep offices.

Oh No! Mr. Bill’s Tax Office Raided by Feds

Kissimmee, Fla.
(May 7, 2009)

Internal Revenue Service agents raided a local tax practice in Central Florida known as Taxes by Mr. Bill and accused the firm of stealing its clients’ tax refunds.

The raid, photographed by a local TV news crew, showed federal agents carrying boxes of documents from the offices. Local police received complaints from Mr. Bill’s customers saying they had been promised refunds in one amount and instead received a lesser amount.

Investigators believe the business may have been falsifying the tax return information filed with the IRS, according to WFTV Eyewitness News. Customers were forced to wait for weeks for their refunds beyond the time they were promised, and the business stopped returning their phone calls.

Proprietor William Galvin could not be reached for comment. The voice mail greeting at the office’s phone number said it was full and could not accept incoming messages. Galvin’s attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment by WebCPA.
