Smolen-Gulf Covered Bridge

2008-10-11 Smolen-Gulf Covered Bridge-09b

View from the west (2008) — The longest covered bridge in the United States was designed by John Smolen, former Ashtabula County Engineer who first conceived the idea of bridging the Ashtabula River Gulf with a wooden structure in 1995. Situated on a realigned State Road at 93 feet above the Ashtabula River, this modified Pratt truss design is constructed of four 152-foot sections that rest on concrete abutments and three concrete piers and is able to carry two lanes of legal-weight traffic. The bridge consists of three-foot thick pieces of Douglas fir and yellow pine hauled in from Wisconsin.
