What is a Mother Drum?

A Mother Drum is similar to a PowWow drum, large enough for a group of people to play together, all at the same time. In recent years, these drums are becoming increasingly popular as an integral part of many communities and drum circles. When a Mother Drum becomes part of a community, it can be used as a gathering place, a "centering" device for individuals, couples, even large groups. |

Although these drums were traditionally made to be played sitting down, on a low stand, Heidrun Hoffmann's innovation added a new element to the tradition by raising the drum so that it can be played while standing, and even dancing.

Where can I find a Mother Drum?
There are a few drum makers around who sell these drums commercially. However, I encourage groups to consider taking the exciting step of making your own Mother Drum. The process is not that difficult, although it is a lot of work. Curious? Come see Making a Mother Drum.
But the end result is very satisfying, and the drum then carries with it an added magic, as it has become a teacher and unifying force, even before the skins are dry and ready to play.
I had the great blessing of being present for the co-creation of Keeps The Song Singing, the Mother Drum at Kokopelli Ranch. It was a touching and powerful adventure for everyone involved.

Living with Heart of Peace has literally changed the course of my life! I have been led through many remarkable experiences as a result of invitations extended to--the drum. When someone asks, "Is that your drum?" my response is to say that it is really the other way around.
It is a big responsibility to take on this sacred work--a healing journey. When you commit to a community drum, it is important to remember that this is a powerful force for transformation.
It is no exaggeration to say that having this drum has changed the course of my life!
