Martha Pollack Sloan (2010 Reunion Gift Co-Chair)
with Bob Sloan

Little did we know when we saw Martha and Bob at our 45th reunion that this would be the last opportunity for many of us to enjoy Martha's chipper disposition, thoughtful absorption of her surroundings, wise observations, and many gifts of friendship. Martha passed away peacefully at home Thursday, December 9, 2010, in Dallas, after a courageous fight against ovarian cancer.

Martha was born May 9, 1943, in Amarillo, TX, to Frank Stanley Pollock and Martha Blanch Allton Pollock. She graduated from Amarillo High School and received her BA degree in history from Hollins. She moved to Dallas after graduation and worked as a bridal consultant at Neiman Marcus. Martha married her husband of 42 years, Robert S. (Bob) Sloan, in October 1968. Martha and Bob loved to travel and to spend time at their cabin in the Conejos River Caņon in Colorado. Martha was a strong supporter of Hollins University and served as a member of the Alumna Board and on numerous committees. She was honored for her service to the University in 2005.

This year she co-chaired with Sally Thompson the effort to raise funds for our class gift to Hollins at reunion. With Sally she raised more than $391,000 for the Hollins "Campaign for Women Who Are Going Places," helping propel contributions to more than $161 million, the largest in the University's 168-year history. She was active in the Dallas chapter of the Hollins alumna association and for many years worked on the Hollins Valentine's Day Tulip Project, a successful fund raiser for scholarships.

As we rejoice in the blessing of Martha's life among us, we also share in the deep sadness of her family and friends at losing her, and wish great courage to Bob during the difficult months ahead.

Martha requested that memorials be sent to Hollins University, P.O. Box 9629, Roanoke, VA 24020, for the Martha Pollock Sloan History Scholarship Fund.
