What Is Holistic?

People often wonder what is meant by the term "holistic"--you might ask yourself is it what your doctor does? It could be. "Holistic" refers to the belief that a wide range of possibilities affect your lifestyle and health. Additionally, being "Holistic" asks you to remember that no one person has all the answers and that holistic health requires you to be the director of your own processes of healing; to seek the individuals who can help answer your questions and help you meet your needs.

When looking for a healthcare practitioner or therapist, it is important that you remember that each doctor or therapist is different and to look for the qualities of compassion, for this will often indicate that they are going to be better suited to helping you decipher the necessary courses of action. And when looking for that "Holistic" practioner, it is important to remember that, above all, how they resonate with you is of the utmost importance. Remember, you are the one seeking their help and are in charge of your life journey.

It's important to remember that when defining what "Holistic" is that there is no set rule. It is neither this nor that. Any health practitioner can be part of your holistic journey, your complete journey of self-healing. And often times holistic will in the long-run be what defines you, rather than your practitioner. As you explore options in healing, such as bodywork, yoga, nutrition, acupuncture/pressure, chiropractic, psychological/psychiatric, medical, movement, or art--it's all valid and important! And when you find the practitoners that suit your needs and lifestyle, who make you feel safe and understood, then you have found a safe healing ground. And always remember "holistic" is about journey, and it is about your journey.

Preparing for a Massage

Massage is a healing art, tailored to meet your needs and one of the nicest things you can do for yourself. As each person is different, this is a only guideline and an introduction to help you decide the most beneficial way for you to receive your massage.

The most common question and concern you might have when going to a massage is one that many others share: and that is a question of clothing. Massages are most effective when you wear no clothing, this is because even minimal clothing, such as underwear, covers up important muscle groups. However, nudity can be uncomfortable for many people and so it is important that you make the decision about the amount or lack of clothing you will wear during your session. No matter what you decide, you will always be covered with a sheet for your comfort. Also, it's important to remove all jewelry and best to leave these personal items at home.

Once you have decided on your level of dress, it's time for you to get comfortable on the massage table. Here's where it's time to begin your relaxation. Some tips:

1. Get comfortable and begin by closing your eyes. Take several deep breaths to draw your attention to your breathing. This focus will allow you to almost immediately become in touch with your body.

2. Breathe deeply through your nose, letting the air flow as deep into your abdominal area as you feel comfortable, without force. Try to sink yourself more and more into the present moment, letting thoughts drift out of your mind as easily as they have drifted in.

3. When you begin to feel your massage therapist's touch, allow yourself to turn your complete attention to their touch. Tune into the quality of their touch, the way you might listen to the sound of someone's voice.

4. Allow yourself to continue breathing deeply, remaining connected to your breath. It can be a good technique to imagine your breath flowing into the very area that your therapist is touching. And let yourself sigh.

5. Whether talking will occur during your session depends on you and your therapist. In most cases, talking during the moments of direct body encounter can lead to distraction and inhibit the work of the massage. So less is more.

6. It's important that when you are working with your therapist that you share any feelings or thoughts that are coming up, if you wish, so that the therapist can move to work with the knots and tensions that occur with regards to these feelings.

7. Talking becomes critical if you need to communicate to your therapist discomfort or if the touching is too deep or too light or if you simply need to use the bathroom.

8. When your massage is over, take time, lie still, keep your eyes closed, continue breathing, and absorb what you are feeling.

Your Body Doesn't Lie

In fact, your body holds all the information that's happened to you during your whole life. It's your living file system. And as a kind of storage space for memories, it's one of the best ways to heal and align the mind/body/spirit connection. And when these aspects of self are aligned healing pathways are found.

It's a delicate proposition: healing the self through accessing information stored in the body. And as such, must be handled with gentleness, compassion, and caring. A safe and comforting way to do this is through Process Acupressure.

With Process Acupressure, you find yourself supported by the bodywork experience and the bodyworker to explore yourself unconditionally. And when this is done, wondrous things can happen.

Each session is created to enable creativity, imagination, and enlightenment--yet is deeply grounded in the here-and-now through the body dynamic, the protocol of acupressure, and touch itself.

Holding "acupoints" that relate to specific areas of difficulty or points throughout the body, clear the energy pathways and support strengthening in your being and encourage you to develop a sense of entitlement "to be who you are".

By working with the body in such a manner as Process Acupressure you can enrich your own unique being through support of spiritual compassion and nonjudgement--in the end you will access your truth and in that, "the truth will set you free."

In My Life: How I Incorporate What I Teach

Maintaining a balanced life is one of the most important things that I try to help clients with and something that I try to incorporate into my own life so that I can better understand the needs of my clients. In keeping with this prinicipal of balance and wholeness, I find that incorporating a good amount of healthy exercise is important--and this is not only a great way to maintain fitness, but also to connect with friends and loved ones. So each day for me involves yoga, (and summers is Yoga on the beach!), rollerblading, jogging, or a walk with friends along the boardwalk in Ocean Grove. I try to encourage those who see me to remember that when looking to balance your life and feel better, you need to find the exercises that you love to do, for some of you that might be hiking, karate, skiing, etc. I have found that exercise helps me to get out of my head and experience some of the joy in life, as well as lubricating

and strengthening the muscles and joints. This is a wonderful place to start to feel balanced, especially in the morning to get everything moving!

After I begin my day off with some movement, I then grab my blender and mix up a variety of fruits and veggies with supplements to nourish my body and help replenish it. I try to follow a macrobiotic diet and find that a great resource for wonderful cooking is my new favorite book Glow, by Christina Pirello. She's a chef from Philly who has her own television show, newsletter, and web site for those interested in learning more (entitled Christina Cooks ).

I find that it's important to incorporate time for rest, relaxation, meditation, as well as self-Process Acupressure (a mixture of JinShin, Zero Balancing, and psychotherapy). It's currently my favorite modality right now to achieve balance and wellness. Of course, after working like this it's important to incorporate care for the our bones and muscles--so I usually recommend and take a epsom salt bath with bubbles and a little aromatherapy (lavander, bergmot, and clary sage work great!) to top off my work, relieving and rejuvenating my muscles.

Then I take time out, sit back and read!

Self-Help Process Acupressure:

Put 2 hackey sacks in a sock so that you have handles at either end (you can also knot a small towell or place tennis balls at either end). Place the balls on either side of the spine, so that you are lying on them. Starting at the tailbone, begin moving them up every minute an inch at a time until they reach your head--releasing all the tension.

(As published in New Jersey Holistic magazine Winter 2002)

Process Acupressure can address many common physical symptoms including back problems, headaches, PMS, respiratory, digestive and systemic problems, as well as colds, flu, allergies and healing from injuries. Over 100 specific acupressure protocals have been developed to provide therapy for all parts of the body and many specific conditions. PA is especially helpful with stress-related conditions, including post-traumatic stress. It is not appropriate for severe medical problems or psychosis and does not replace medical care.

Finger pressure is used to stimulate acupoints on the body's surface. The pressure used in specific combinations helps to open and balance energy pathways tht have been restricted. This helps to alleviate pain and various dysfunctions and brings greater harmony and function to all other systems in the body.

Process Acupressure also helps promote better health and renewed energy by actively involving you in your own healing and growth processes. It teaches you to become more aware of your body and your "process"--that is, you particular history, style, and patterns of thinking, feeling, behavior, health, and illness. It teaches you how to respect and follow this process as your own unique path to health and growth. You will more readily recognize the subtle things you do to foster, or suppress the natural growth process. You can learn new ways to help yourself and how to change those patterns that are not working.

Dr. Aminah Raheem developed the holistic method of Process Acupressure after more than 20 years of study in various psychologies and hands-on modalities, along with 35 years of spiritual practice. She was an adjunct faculty member of The Institute for Transpersonal Psychology for 10 years. She is a mother, Zero Balancing Teacher, Diplomate of Process Work, transpersonal psycologist, and author. She has taught Process Acupressure and integrative body psycology to both student and practitioners in the United States and throughout Europe.

Dr. Raheem's book, Soul Return: Integrating Body, Psyche, and Spirit, was one of the first to bring the soul into bodywork and psychology. Soul Return addresses the roles that the body and soul have in psychological development and transformation. It is a scientifically conducted, well-reasoned survey of the factors that affect health--from love and wisdom to soul purpose, enlightenment and service.

PA grew out of Dr. Aminah Raheem's search for ways to work with all parts of a person simultaneously. After investigating many bodywork styles, she chose traditional acupressure and combined it with the unique touch of Dr. Fritz Smith's Zero Balancing, which addresses both energy and structure. The bodywork was then combined with various psychospiritual process skills developed by Aminah, which included principles of Arnold Mindell's Process Work. These principles and tecniques in combination bring about a therapeutic approach that can elicit and fulfill the individual needs of the client.

What happens during a PA treatment? Typically, a session takes from 1 to 1 1/2 hours. During this time you lie fully clothed on a massage table while the practitioner applies gentle pressure to your acupoints (the same as used in acupuncture). Normally the session has several phases: As a state of relaxation ensues, you may become aware of issues within your body and/or consciousness. As the session progresses, you may go into a deeper state of awareness, beneath surface tension, to access clarity or guidance about issues at hand. Finally, integration and completion of the process occur as the session is closed by chakra balancing and grounding.

ZERO BALANCING .....A Breath of Fresh Air

Hypopnea/Hyperpnea. I love those words. They have a lot of character. They are medical terms used to describe a breathing cycle that occurs frequently during a Zero Balancing session. Hypopnea is the quiet state before a hyperpnea or "big breath." Hypopnea is mysterious since it is the silent, quiet, nonexistent breath. Where are you? It's as if you're in a dream state. Yes, that very rich state where you can connect with your soul. Your breath opens your body to receive the gentle healing energy of the treatment and you are forever changed. You are gifted graciously with buoyancy, which brings a new consciousnes to forgotten ideas and areas of the body, which awaken as if from a long sleep to be clarified, enlightened. Hyperpnea: an invocation that excites every cell, stimulating the organs to wake up and seize the moment. And what a moment! The cobwebs are blown away and pure juice remains. Fresh oxygen supplying the body, reaching to every crevice and fold of skin and tissue. Feed tension, delighted senses, a rested state...You are supported by the practitioner's touch, a simple, yet profoundly deep connection that unlocks the treasure of who you are. Hyperpnea: permission to expand yourself to be who you are more strongly, an act of entitlement to inhabit your own space more fully.

"Alvina," asks Colleen,"What would the world be without ZB?". For she has known Zero Balancing to create confirmation of herself; to support her in clarifying her needs and wants by the simple richness of bone on bone. Bone released from stress via Zero Balancing to simply support us as the skeleton was intended to; unfettered by burdens of anxiety, predjudice, shame, abuse, illness, confusion, etc., to be as it was intended to be: pure energy moving with grace; pure structure connected with the ground. Alignment happens!

There is a Pyramid Meditation which Dr. Fritz Smith (the originator of Zero Balancing) teaches. It utilizes the chakras and our connection to heaven and earth providing energetic alignment for all within the pyramid. Usually a prayer is said to include the earth in our healing efforts for it is she who is supporting our lives here and we need always to be gracious and honor her for allowing us to use her paths, her air, her water, her warmth and her coolness. She provides our environment, our home. We make ourselves more at home by our practices, living harmoniously and vigilantly with and for the earth.

Hyperpnea!...Oh!...Yes!...I'm alive! A radiant Being who stands with others. Here, on earth!

The Enneagram

The Enneagram is an ancient form of personality typing devised by the Jesuits to get along better together in the monastaries. It was notoriously passed down verbally until the 1970's when Helen Palmer, PhD, Stanford University, brought it out in her book, The Enneagram: Understanding Yourself and the Others in Your Life.

There are numerous teachers and writers and workshops on the Enneagram today, even a newsletter. Don Richard Riso and Russ Hudson of New York City have an excellent book called, The Wisdom of The Enneagram: The Complete Guide to Psychological andSpiritual Growth for the Nine Personality Types.

Soul Lightning by Aminah Raheem, PhD. is a fascinating and beautifully written memoir of Raheem's lifelong journey of knowing soul in eloquent, true-to-life and matter -of-fact accounts of the path of a healer; learning, growing, listening, seeing, feeling and being with transformatonal events and the people who endured/survived/participated in them. As well as introductions to the teachers who were influential on her path such as Sai Baba, Mother Meera, Amaji, to name a few , it includes compelling descriptions of synchronistic moments and the magic of life such as when a lightning strikes a light bulb in Raheem's cabin and leaves it intact. It's a testimony to the amazing power of intuition and recognition of truth. She acknowledges the simplicity of what we all do on a daily basis and encourages the ability to know and be conscious on all levels--not just those that have been given us like an ancestral lineage or chilhood scars--to embrace that change can happen with grace. She also opens a door to consciousness just by mentioning these stories. It's as though she's saying, " See...here is the possibility of knowing truth--simple truth. It doesn't have to take a lifetime. It can happen in a flash. Go For It!!".

This book inspires me personallyto want to travel to the holy places like Asissi and the power places on earth like the Indian Burial Grounds where I might contact the source of who I am....my soul wisdom. Luckily, I have studied Aminah's Process Acupressure work and have that as a tool to access source. Yoga, meditation, Aminah's Chakra Tai Chi, Fritz Smith's Pyramid Meditation, walking, running, rowing, acupuncture, dreaming, Zero Balancing,Reiki, all these and other methods can be avenues for growth and day-to-day soul contact.

In Soul Lightning we are privy to Raheem's personal quest for spiritual enlightenment. Why do we suffer? she asks, and What can we do about it? As a child she receives an answer in the form of a great light saying to her " We are all One". Then, a bolt of lightning which miraculously kills no one and damages nothing. She discovers a spiritual teaching known as Subud. She knows spirit or soul more closely each time she practices the tools of Subud or encounters another teacher on her spiritual quest. It is a journey where we realize that everything matters if we become aware of congruencies and synchronicities we can begin to solve the puzzle of why we are here...each of us, individually, healing ourselves and subsequently others as well.

I am impressed by Raheem's capturing of a concept and her ability to puzzle together the elements which support her perspective. The concept of Soul Lightning is pure gold for Raheem since she has had the experiences which illustrate such phenomena throughout her life. She shares these experiences in a fluid and historical way. Being privy to the journey is captivating, and it is all recognizeable stuff if you travel in the circle of the spiritually inclined. Soul Lightning Awakening Soul Consciousness a review by Alvina Quatrano

cont....

Are we all as gifted as Raheem? She would have us think so. She does say that not everyone is a "teacher". It is a question of whether or not you want to be. Seek and you shall find, otherwise you stay in the dark. Or, perhaps a lightning bolt will come and wake you up to your destiny---your purpose---your soul. Ask the questions and the answers will come. This book is about healing. Healing our inner child (soothing her). Healing our adult (to forge on). Healing our world (which is in danger of being destroyed by ignorance).

Raheem presents a carefully laid out explanation of man's condition (armoring, cocooning which are ways of protecting oneself from the forces which offend from childhood on) and a solution--the task of awakening soul consciousness. For Raheem this is a lifetime journey. She goes on to say that although the awakening process is usually gradual and follows a practice of some kind but can often be abrupt or unexpected. I quote, "In my experience true spiritual development and soul consciousness only become accessible in one way or another (abruptly or deliberately, painstakingly). A stronger force is required. The Dalai Lama has traveled the world conducting Bhuddist initiaitons that have undoubtedly helped open the world to it's soul.".

Follow Aminah through her knowledge of, and ultimate dissatisfaction with, psychology, to the development of her own practice of Process Acupressure and her many stories of enightenment and the encounters and practices that bring it. She says in her introduction that she hopes the stories stimulate memories of our own soul lightning and indeed upon asking it does.

Aminah quotes the Bhuddist sage Joko:

" There is no end to the opening up that is possible for a human being. Eventually, we see that we are the limitless, boundless ground of the universe. Our job for the rest of our life is to open up into that immensity and to express it.".

Dr. Fritz Smith's Parellel Breath Meditation

When feeling overwhelmed or uncertain about something like a decision or the pace of life.

Sit down and inhale deeply.

Imagining that the breath is traveling from your head (crown) to your feet(ground).

When you exhale imagine that the breath travels from the feet up through the head.

Continue for 10 minutes or until feeling better.
