García – Garza-de la Garza Workshop
by Roberto Vela
HOGAR conducted an exploratory
workshop on January 29, 2005 to help member genealogists find linkages to their García and Garza – de la Garza beginnings
in the New World.
The Garza – de la Garza
connections were easier to establish because many people have been able to trace their origin to Marcos Alonzo de la Garza
(1562-1634) married to Catalina Martinez Guajardo and also Juana de Treviño, his second wife. It is now well known that this
genealogy can be found in what I now call "the Great Books" of Guillermo Garmendia Leal, Tomás Mendirichaga Cueva, and other
pioneers. Reference to these connections can also be found in some of our HOGAR journals.
The García linkages have been
harder to find. One of the earliest García families is that of Lucas García married to Juliana de Quintanilla. Lucas García
comes from Baltazar Sosa family, who comes from the Diego Montemayor family. This genealogy is found in HOGAR Journal –
Volume III pages 54-67. At this workshop all references to the García and Garza – de la Garza lineages from the seven
HOGAR journals were distributed to the participants. The purpose was to facilitate or save time for someone looking for "missing"
or hereto "unknown" relatives. The references from Joel Escobar’s Family Tree Book were also listed.
The workshop was deemed successful
in that the one of the objectives was to identify more "sets" of lineages which could be tied into one’s family tree.
This was merely one approach to the "study" of one or two family names. HOGAR welcomes more ideas and suggestions on improving
this venture. If anyone wants more specific information we obtained on the Garcia’s or Garza – de la Garza’s,
please e-mail us.
Go to Lucas Garcia page where the you will find the first three or four generations of the Lucas García and Marcos Alonso de la Garza lineages.
Only the males are listed because they are the ones that generally continue that family name. Of course the females can be
researched through the same sources
