Introduction to The Brian Jones Fan Club
&
 The Spirit Magazine

The Brian Jones Fan Club and The Spirit magazine were started in January 1996 to meet the demand from Brian's many fans across the World.  Our initial concern was how we were going to fill a magazine for someone who had been dead for 27 years but we were inundated with newspaper articles, photographs, magazines and memorabilia, enough to fill several books, not just magazines.

We were also thrilled to be approached by so many musicians and friends of Brian and we are proud to say that our Honorary Members now include Sir Cliff Richard, Marianne Faithfull, Anita Pallenberg, Tony Blair, Mansun, Amanda Lear, Gered Mankowitz and so many others who have all helped to get us where we are today.

Issue 1 of The Spirit was a huge success with media and we were subsequently approached by the Chrysalis Group (London), who were so impressed by the magazine that they are now selling it across Europe for us.  A similar arrangement was negotiated with Richochet Disques and La Fonograph International for distribution in Canada during 1998.

The Editorial Team are David Reynolds (Editor) who is based in Brian's home town of Cheltenham, England; Pat Andrews (Associate Editor) who was Brian's girlfriend and had his son Julian Mark in 1961.  Pat had been asked many times before to associate herself with a fan club for Brian but had, until 1996, always declined.  After coming to terms with many painful memories of her relationship with him, Pat has become Brian's "Champion"; Richard Lovett (Co-Associate Editor) is a lifelong fan and collector of Brian Jones memorabilia whose knowledge of Brian is invaluable to the team.  Last but not least we also have our correspondents: Arnold J. Berkman in The Netherlands, Roberto C Jones in Spain and Margie Calvano in the US.

The aim of the Editorial Team is to produce a music based magazine (3 each year) of which we feel Brian would have been proud and also to finally get him the recognition he deserves for being the founder member of The Rolling Stones.  Brian Jones had a unique style and charisma that played a significant part in the creation of the Sixties and we are determined that he has his place in Rock 'N' Roll history.

We  have worked long and hard since the launch and have funded the magazine mostly from our own pockets.  The thing that has kept us going is the positive response we are now getting towards Brian and the amount of fans that are coming forward.  The demand for information on Brian Jones is bigger than we ever expected and we have received several thousand enquiries since January 1996.  We keep a close eye on today's music and see Brian's influence in music, clothes and lifestyle and we feel sure that he would be proud to have left such a legacy.

The Editorial Team feel proud that much has been achieved in a relatively short time and recognition of The Brian Jones Fan Club and The Spirit magazine by the press and media have added to our credibility and Brian's publicity.  It does not stop here.  Two movies on Brian are being planned as well as a TV documentary and new books.  Brian will become more readily available to his ever growing fans through T-shirts, videos, posters, calendars and  other related merchandise being produced by the fan club in association with Gered Mankowitz.

We will continue to produce a quality magazine and web site in Brian's name for the fans and by the fans.  Your interest and support are invaluable.

Regular club events include celebrating Brian's birthday ("In Spirit" each 28th February) and the anniversary of his death each 3rd July (both in Cheltenham), plus possible trips to his home Cotchford Farm, Sussex.

The Brian Jones Statue Appeal was launched on 3rd July 1998.  The appeal hopes to raise 25000 pounds for a bronze statue which will be modelled from a photograph submitted by Gered Mankowitz.  Public opinion is that it should stand in the Promenade, Cheltenham.
