In the affairs of some
of the people under repression one encounters
different spelling variants of their surnames,
first names, and patronymics. They are presented in
the book as follows:
-- In the basic
alphabetical listing the surname is shown as the
person arrested gave it on his questionnaire, as
given in his personal specifications, or as in the
KGB listing.
-- In the first
supplement other spelling variants of this person's
surname or his alias are cited and are given the
same reference number (Nr p/p) as in the basic
alphabetical listing.
-- In the second
supplement these same surname variants are shown,
but here are given in alphabetical order, and as
much as possible keeping in order the numbering of
the basic listing.

All spelling variants
of first names and patronymics will be given in
subsequent alphabetical volumes of "Odessa
Martyrology" together with complete references
about the people under repression. In the first
volume the first name and patronymic are shown as
given by the arrested person in his questionnaire,
in his personal specifications, in that set during
the interrogation protocol, or in the KGB listing.
A variant is shown only in a case where the first
name and patronymic is completely different from
what is shown in the basic case.
In the column
"Sentence, Verdict, Report" data are listed about
measures taken carrying out the judicial verdict or
sentence by non-judicial organs (committee of
three, special deliberations, and others); in the
absence of a verdict (sentence) a different report
is given -- about release, staging, death, and
others.
Many of the people
under repression were arrested twice, some three
times, and even four times. These data will be
presented in subsequent alphabetical volumes, shown
here will be only one, the maximum sentence a
person received.

Note by
translator: In the last two abbreviations
the words translate to two different English
words and without context there is no way of
saying which is meant. For the last one the same
word was used in the parenthetical explanation
and there seems to translate one way while the
situation being described seems to mean the
other.
