Wonderland

Harrahs Reno has finally replaced Gordie Brown in Sammy’s Showroom. Before I get into the meat of this review I would like to say that I really enjoyed this show but you can tell it is relatively new, only lasting 80 minutes. That said you should see the show so you can see it in a small intimate setting before it is snatched up by a bigger room in Las Vegas. The new show is called Wonderland and it’s an experience you shouldn’t miss. Wonderland is self described as a show that features “Rock ‘n’ Roll, comedy, dance, and illusion”. Larry Wilson and his team of Emmy award winning creators has invented a show where only the unexpected can be expected.

Wonderland has heart stopping classic rock from Steppenwolf, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones. Illusions that will keep you up at night trying to figure out how it was done, great dance and terrific comedy.

The show is loosely based (very loosely) on Alice in Wonderland. Larry Wilson and his partners turned the entire idea of Alice in wonderland on it’s head with unexpected twists and turns. Harrahs Reno says “Certainly this psychedelic Wonderland is not the stuff of children‘s tales, but a show where you can leave the real world behind to enjoy a night of entertainment unlike anything you‘ve ever experienced.”

Show prices and times are $39.95, 8pm Sunday - Tuesday, 8pm Thursday and Friday as well as 9pm Saturdays. To reserve seats call

The Rio Las Vegas

It’s not hard to see why the Rio is the crown jewel of the Harrah’s organization. Located slightly off the strip on Flamingo Road, it’s bright blue and purple lights are a Mecca for Las Vegas.

The Rio is immense with over 1700 square feet dedicated for slots and video poker and 70 table games ranging from black jack, baccarat, roulette, let it ride, Caribbean stud and craps, the Rio has everything you are looking for when gambling. If you are looking for new and exciting games the Rio always has something for you currently featuring Boston Five Card Stud. If Slot machines are more your cup of tea the Rio prides itself on always offering the finest and newest slot machines.

You can travel the world in the restaurants of the Rio, everything from Italian at Antonio’s Italian Ristorante, Indian at Gaylord Indian Restaurant, to standard coffee shop fare at Sao Paulo Café. The buffets at the Rio are the best in Vegas, the Carnival World Buffet is affordable at $14.95 and offers everything from Mexican, Burgers, Pizza, Asian to some of the best desserts around. Carnival Buffet is worth the visit alone but make sure you don’t eat before you arrive. The Village Seafood Buffet is also well worth the visit definitely the best seafood buffet in Las Vegas. Other restaurants at the Rio include All American Bar and grille, Bamboleo Mexican Restaurant, Buzio’s Seafood Restaurant, Fiore Steakhouse, Hamada’s Asiana Restaurant, Rosemary’s, Star Deli Express, Tilted Kilt Bar, Toscano’s Deli Market, Voodoo Café Lounge and Vine Cellar and Tasting Room.

If eating and gambling isn’t your style the Rio offers a wide variety of things to do from over 60,000 square feet of shopping ranging from artwork to fresh flowers. The spa and salon is one of the best around. Ipanema Beach offers a great relaxing vibe. The Rio also has a world class golf course, the Rio Secca Golf Course is located in the foothills of the Black Mountain and is only 12 minutes off the strip. This very challenging course is home to the Tiger Jam Celebrity Scramble, the Jack Daniels / Rio Secco Shootout as well as many other golf events during the year.

New at the Rio is BevErtainment which is both male and female cocktail servers that perform every hour on stages thoughout the casino. The festival in the sky is still a must see with floats suspended from the ceiling and beads being tossed to the crowd while entertainers dance. Both are great and add an excitement you just won’t get at other casinos.

The Rio advertises their rooms as all suites and that’s an understatement, when you enter your room you are greeted by a floor to ceiling window. The room is equipped with a 32” tv, 2 queen size beds and a wrap around sofa. The bathroom has 2 sinks a coffee maker, refrigerator, and a vanity. One odd feature is that the shower has a window that looks into the living room. The view is great over looking either the mountains or the strip.

The Rio offers everything you need when on vacation, from meeting rooms to fine dining, spa’s etc. The staff was friendly and helpful, I could spend a week in the place and never see or experience it all. It’s not hard to see why the Rio is the best Harrah’s property around surpassed by none.

Penn and Teller, not your parents magic

I had a birthday recently and was given one of the best presents ever, tickets to Penn and Teller at the Rio. The performance takes place in the wonderful Samba Theatre. It's a beautiful place without a bad seat in the house.

When going to the show go early and listen to the jazz band, Teller performs in this and it just helps set a light fun mood. Before the show starts you are invited to come down onto the stage and look over and touch the 2 boxes that will be used later in the show.

The show begins promptly at 9:00 PM with Penn thanking everyone for coming out, then he pokes a little fun at other Vegas shows including Lance Burton and Sigfried and Roy.

The show has many different tricks ranging from Teller escaping from the 2 boxes mentioned before, Penn juggling broken bottles to putting a bunny into a wood chipper. A good thing about the show is they will walk you through some of the tricks showing you how they are accomplished.

The performance lasts around 2 hours but is fast paced, feeling as if it just began when it ends. The big finale is when Penn and Teller catch bullets in their teeth, and excellent trick and I still don't have a clue how they do it.

One last cool thing is when you are leaving the show both Teller and Penn greet you good bye, you can shake their hands and talk with them for a second. This is one of the best shows in Las Vegas lots of energy, excitement and humor. I feel this is one of the top 5 shows in Vegas a must see. Lucky Nugget - Where anyone can strike gold
Basic Strategy for Let it Ride

Let it Ride is one of the newest casino games with a following that rivals Blackjack. Based on 5 Card Stud Poker it's the only game that has its own theme music (played on pays of straights or better) crowds always gather to watch and play.
The basics for Let it Ride is as follows; there are 3 betting areas and a side bet. To begin the game you must put equal amounts in each of the 3 betting areas playing the side bet is optional with wagers starting at $1.00. The side bet pays on a payout schedule (see below) beginning with 2 pairs or better. The great thing about Let it Ride is that you do not play against the dealer, you don't have to worry about the dealer qualifying like on Caribbean Stud or 3 Card Poker and the dealers cards are used in your hand. To win your hand you must have a pair or 10?s or better.
After placing your bets every player is dealt 3 cards, the dealer gets 2 cards that will be used later in your hand. After the dealer gives you your cards you make the choice on whether to let your bet ride or pull it back. If you want to pull your bet back, scratch you cards towards you on the table, like taking a hit in Blackjack. Most players will pull back the first bet if they do not have a paying pair or better. Paying pairs begin with 10's or better. Next the dealer will flip the first of their 2 cards this card is used in your hand. Like before you decide whether to let your bet ride or pull it back, pulling your bet back will not affect you first bet. For example if you Let it Ride on your first bet but after seeing the first dealers card you aren't as confident you can pull your second bet back but your first remains. Most players let their second bet ride if they have a paying pair or if there is a possibility of a straight or better. Finally the dealer flips their last card and again this is used in your hand.

Payout schedule
Pair of 10's or better / 1:1
2 Pair / 2:1
3 of a Kind / 3:1
Straight / 5:1
Flush / 8:1
Full House / 11:1
4 of a Kind / 50:1
Straight Flush / 200:1
Royal Flush / 1000:1
Bonus Payout Schedule (Varies between Casinos)
2 Pair / 4:1
3 of a Kind / 8:1
Straight / 25:1
Flush / 50:1
Full House / 75:1
4 of a Kind / 100:1
Straight Flush / 2000:1
Royal Flush / 10000:1
