The Charlottesville English Country Dance meets on the second Friday of every month except July and August. This is a
gracious, lively, pleasurable, and entertaining recreation. Please join us.
NEXT DANCE:
Friday, November
14 at 8 pm.
Introductory instruction at 7:30 pm.
Caller: John Wheeler
Musicians: Connie Muscenti, piano; Beverly
Seng, fiddle; Colin Ramirez, flute and mandolin; Beth Kuhn, fiddle and recorder; Nick Kuhn, cello and guitar.
We dance in a lovely hall with wooden floor, high beamed ceiling. and big windows at St.
Paul's Episcopal Church in Ivy, Virginia. The church is at the corner of US Route 250 and Owensville Road
about 4 miles west of Charlottesville. Directions at http://rscds-greaterdc.org/ivy.html.
We dance to live music, usually by local musicians. The dances are called by local callers. All are welcome. No partner needed.
Do bring a separate pair of shoes for dancing so you won't have to dance in your street shoes, which often have grit in the
soles that can mar the floor.
English Country dancing is the precurser to modern contra dancing and Scottish Country dancing. All three forms
share a common set of formations (longways, square, and round sets) and figures (circle, rights and lefts, figure eight, hey,
etc.). The movement style is the dance walk, i.e., walking in time to the music, with a light step and elevated carriage.
