10 Paddling Days on New Mexico Lakes -  Sept. 9-18, 2005

If you have not read the introduction to the trip on the "Navajo 1" page please review that overall description of the trip.

There was just too much good scenery to limit the trip to one page of pictures.  This page contains pictures from days 7 and 8 on the southern end of Navajo Lake.  Merlin Emrys and I were staying in the Sims Mesa Unit of New Mexico's Navajo State Park.  It is located on the southeast end of the lake about 2 miles opposite the dam and the Pine River Recreation Area (the parks main campground and marina).  On day 7 we paddled about 3.5 Nm up the Los Pinos arm of the Lake.  We went up the western shore and returned down the eastern shore taking side trips into all of the small coves and inlets along the way.  On day 8 we did a short 2 hr trip to the south shore of Frances Canyon near the dam before leaving for other destinations.

Southern end of the Los Pinos arm of Navajo Lake
View is north from San Juan/Pinos junction.
Los Pinos is the western arm of the "V" shaped lake

More of the interesting Pinos features
View is on west shore of Los Pinos arm
Although most of the colors were subtle, sometimes you got a bright surprise

Another view up the Los Pinos arm
View is north from where we turned to go back
We only got 3.5 Nm up the Los Pinos. There was still another 7 Nm to go, but no time.

More of those fallen boulders.
View is south along east shore of Pinos
They often left small passages that were fun to paddle through

One of the colorful rocks of Francis Canyon
View is on south shore of Frances Canyon
We saw this type several places, but Frances Canyon had some of the prettiest ones

A colorful streak caught my eye
View is east where Echo joins Frances
Frances canyon really did have some of the most interesting and colorful formations

Los Pinos cliffs had many interesting patterns
View is on west shore of Pinos
This one looked a lot like wood grain

Merlin Emrys in alcove in one of Pinos side inlets
View is on Pinos west shore about 2 miles up river
The still picture does not do justice to the rippling light reflections dancing off the overhang

Some big boulders have come down the slopes
View is on Pinos east shore 2.5 miles up river
This one had some interesting patterns

Interested spectators
View is east shore of Pinos near San Juan junction
We debated mountain goats vs bighorns only to discover they were domestic goats gone wild

Echo Canyon
View south from within 1st side canyon in Frances
Actually unamed side canyon in Frances, but I named it for the great echoes it produced
