On the Nueces in search of moonlight  -  August 19, 2005

A beautiful rising moon on my exercise paddle a few days before full moon prompted me to put out a quick call for a full moon paddle for the club.  With the short notice I only got 3 takers for the trip.  Mirta, Denise, Catherine and I arrived at the Hazel Bazemore Park boat launch at about 6:45.  As we were unloading kayaks were were joined by Paula and Glen who were coming out for an evening paddle without knowing we were doing the full moon trip.  We paddled lazily up the Nueces headed in a generally NW direction.  There were no special sightings, but we had a nice view of the developing sunset especially on those river sections which lined up with the setting sun.  Paula and Glenn did not have any lights so they turned back early.  The rest of us paddled for about an hour (till a little past 8 pm).  On the way back I paddled several sections in reverse so I could watch the sunset.  As it got dark we began to worry a little.  Were we going to see the moon rise over the trees before we had to leave the river?   As we rounded a bend suddenly there was a huge golden orb rising just over the left bank.  As we continued around the bend the river aligned with the rising moon so that we had a long moonlight reflection right down the middle of the Nueces.  After 15-20 minutes the change in river direction put the moon below the tree-line again.  We did get a couple more short, but good, views just before getting back to the launch.  This was my first attempt at night photography and my photographs do not due justice to what we actually saw.  Hope you enjoy them anyway.

Sun behind heavy clouds looked like sunset, but it was stil 30 min to true sunset

Night mode's slow shutter speed makes for blury but interesting shot from the kayak
