A beautiful sunrise and dolphins are all you could ask for  -  August 13, 2005

We were having our 2nd club trip in two weeks and amazingly we had 8 people for this trip just like the last one.  That may be a record for turnout on consecutive club outtings.  I arrived at the Nueces Bay Bait Stand by the Portland Causeway a few minutes before the scheduled 7 am meeting time. I wanted to get some sunrise pictures and to make sure that I was not the last person on the water as is usually the case.  We launched into Nueces Bay and made a slow pass by the bird nesting island near the launch.  Since this is late in the breeding season there were only a few Great Blue Herons and some gulls on the island.  We headed over to the sunken barge and then up the undeveloped industrial channel where we sometimes get some good birding.  Evidently it was too late in the season there also.  The group split apart as we paddled back out of the channel and two of us paddled out around a point toward the middle of the bay.  Just as we were about to turn we spotted the dolphins.  They swam over to us and then lead us back to the rest of the group. Everyone got a chance for a close up encounters as the dolphins accompanied us all the way back to the lanuch.

Sunrise over CC Bay

The colors were quite amazing

Rafael and son Gustavo with our kayaks

They were visiting from Mexico where Rafael manufactures the Mayan Seas line of kayaks

Launching under the causeway

Not the most picturesque beach, but very convenient for trips on Nueces Bay

Another view of the "Barge Garden"

Neither plastic kayaks nor British heavies want to play in this garden

Dolphin right in front of the kayak

This pod of dolphins swam behind us, beside us, in front of us, and circled us.

The final fin

I tried to get ahead and get a pic of the whole pod, but this was all I got before they disappeared

Another view of the sunrise

The combination of color and the various cloud formations made a great view

Even well after sunrise the view was interesting

I paddled out and got this pic while the rest of the group was loading their kayaks

South Texas rock garden ???

Its the closest thing we have, but it is actually only an old sunken barge

Fins near the channel entrance

The dolphins were out in mid bay, but swam over to the channel where the main group was gathered

One of my best dolphin pics to date

There were sometimes a group of 4 dolphins beside the kayak, but a pair was the most I photographed
