Jumping dolphins at the Lighthouse -  July 10, 2005

I had two visiting paddlers from Ausin, Tx come down for the weekend.  I suggested that we paddle out to the Port Aransas Lighthouse on Sunday morning and look for dolphins.  We launched from the Lighthouse Lakes Trails parking area and paddled down the Aransas Channel to the Lydia Ann Channel and then north up to the lighthouse.  We did not see any dolphins so we took some time to explore the mangroves behind the lighthouse.  We then paddled the short distance over to San Jose Island for lunch.  Just as we were finishing lunch we spotted a group of dolphins swimming by up the channel.  We hurriedly jumped into the kayaks and followed.  In the next hour we interacted with what I think were 3 different pods.  We saw some spectacular jumps which included several with 2 dolphins jumping together.  It ended with some 7 dolphins swimming alongside and between the kayaks for about 20 minutes.  At one point I was being led by 3 dolphins so close that I had slow down to keep from running over them.  Finally we had to head for home and they went their own way.  A great day with the dolphins.

The lighthouse has been restored, but visitors are not allowed at this time.

Jumping Dolphins were the highlight of the trip

This was the only "jumping" picture I got of the 7-10 jumps we saw

Dolphins were sometimes less than paddle away

They seemed to be having a good time playing with the kayaks.

This is not the best "beach" but it was ok for a quick lunch

One pod decided to join us for a while

They swam alongside, between, and in front of the kayaks for about 20 min.
