An evening on the Nueces after a month without paddling -  July 1, 2005

A 3 week hiking trip in Utah (plus prep before and cleanup after) has kept me off the water for more than a month.  This evening I got the chance to get back on the water with an evening paddle on the Nueces River.  Winnie and Pat joined me for this 6 Nm trip out of Hazel Bazemore Park.  We paddled from 5:30 pm to about 8:30 pm.  The trees are fully leafed out and as the sun began to set we got some much needed shade.  The shade helped make the 90+ degF temp and 70+ % humidity at least bearable.  We did not see many birds and no jumping gar on this trip.  Winnie did see 3 small snakes.  All in all it was a nice relaxing trip to get back into my paddling mode.

At 5:30 it was still sunny and hot

As we started the Nueces was not really shaded

The fully leafed trees make up a green wall around the river

Finally the sun was low enough that we were paddling in the shade

The paddle back was a lot cooler than the paddle out

As the sun went lower the banks became more photogenic

Can you find the rope swing among the vines?
