A trip on the upper reaches of Lake Corpus Christi -  May 1, 2005

Charlie and Kavita invited the CC Paddlers up to their new place on Lake Corpus Christi for a day of paddling.  It is located on the north end of the lake where the water starts to return to its original Nueces River form.  For several years the low water level had limited access to this part of the lake, but the lake is now 100% full and you can paddle on the main lake, several side sloughs, or up the main river channel.  We met at 11:00 am and went for a short (1.5 hr) paddle up one of the side sloughs.  There was an egret rookery at the end of the slough with lots of birds.   We also saw quite a few of the black bellied tree ducks and one spoonbill sitting up on a dead tree.  We came back to the house for lunch.  We had all brought our own lunches, but Kavita had prepared food for everyone so we sat around talking and completely stuffing ourselves for a couple of hours (the chutney and the smoked salmon were great).  About 2:30 we took off for a short paddle up the main river channel.  Charlie said that the winter freeze had killed most of the hyacinth, but it was coming back with a vengance and we found ourselves backtracking after it blocked our way through one of the channels.  An aggessive water moccasin convinced us it was time to turn around and head back home.  It was a great day on a part of the lake that I had never paddled and with great people I always enjoy.  Thanks so much Charlie and Kavita.

Charlie and Kavita's new lake house

It is a work in progress with a great location on a gentle slope about 100 yards from the lake

Ken helping Pat get things adjusted

It was so nice to be able to drive down to the lake and load up all the gear without a long carry

Heading up the slough

We were going to paddle up this little slough to check out the rookery just past the highway bridge

Invasive water hyacinth

Despite a freeze dieback, it is rapidly taking over large sections of the water

Lone spoonbill

I have never seen a spoonbill up in a tree like this. They are normally a salt-water shore-bird

.

Great Egrets in the rookery

I got a little too close and some started to fly so I backed away quickly.

Pat testing out Kavita's Solstice after lunch

Charlie's matching Solstice can be seen in the background.

Wayne and all our kayaks

It was a beautiful day. It was too bad only 7 of us came up to paddle

.

Two paddlers in a Triple kayak

Originally built for adventure racing, now it is used so those without kayaks can join the fun.

Pat test paddling the Avatar

She has done lots of canoeing but is trying out kayaks before buying her first one

.

Hyacinth flower

Such intricacy, complexity, and beauty for so problematic a plant

Lots of dead timber along the slough.

There must have been a nice creek running through here before the lake flooded the area.

The egret rookery

Lots of cattle egrets, great egrets, and possibly a few snowy egrets nesting in the flooded trees.

Landing for lunch at the picnic shelter

We stuffed ourselves with Kavita's good cooking while relaxing in the shade of their picnic shelter
