My first chance to paddle in a while and it turns windy -  April 28, 2005

The damage from backing into the carport had left me without a way to get the kayak to the water for 8 days.  Luckily Ken Johnson returned from his Florida kayaking trip just in time to get me back into the water before I went completely stir crazy.  He picked me up at 8:30 and we headed down to the Corpus Christi Marina boat ramp for a short bay paddle.  The wind speed had not taken its normal overnight drop.  Instead it had held steady around 15 mph for the entire night and was forecast to get stronger as the day went on.  We expected some pretty good waves, but not exactly the wind we got.   It was blowing hard enough that we paddled out right up against the breakwater for a little protection.   We exited the breakwater and turned back SSE to paddle directly into the winds and waves.  It was hard work and I turned to make a surfing run back after about 3/4 NM and Ken followed.  The weather service showed steady wind around 20 mph and gusts to 31 at about that time.  We surfed past the main marina entrance and on into the 3rd one.  We paddled on the protected side back to the main entrance and then headed out into the bay again.  We made a 2nd surfing run back to the 3rd entrance and then decided to just paddle back to the launch on the protected side.  It was protected from the waves but we still had that wind right in our face most of the way.  The waves were not well formed, but there were sets of 3-3.5 footers that allowed us to catch some pretty good rides.  They were not the easiest waves to catch so I was pretty tired after the 2nd surfing run and really tired after paddling straight into the wind back to the launch.  Even tired, I felt great being back on the water again.

Careful of concrete and barnicles when launching
Our floating dock has been removed so we have to use the concrete motor-boat launch

The protected side of the breakwater

I was trying to get a pic of spray coming over the rocks but my timing was bad

The main entrance through the breakwater

We got our first idea of wave size as we saw them breaking over the rocks on the north side

Ken finishing up our first surfing run

I was protected by a section of the breakwater so the camera was steadier in this shot

Ken down in a trough

The waves were smaller here than farther out in the bay, but sitll large enough for small rides

You know the wind is really blowing when there are whitecaps on the protected side of the breakwater

Simple launch at high water but not at low water
Last time here I lost a big chunk of gel coat. Ken was hoping for a swim photo

It was in focus until I started bouncing up and down on waves coming in through the entrance

Ken finishing a short ride

It was hard to hold a straight line and lots of rides ended with fast diagonal run

Ken back up on top

He caught the next wave and had good fast ride, but I was too slow to get it on film
