A different St. Patrick's Day celebration -  March 17, 2005

I decided to celebrate St Partrick's day by finishing the intracoastal paddle I had to abort due to my lost keys (see "Lost/Found" trip).  I launched into Packery Channel at the JFK bridge and headed south down the Intracoastal.  Today I had a 10-15 mph north wind and a very slight current both helping me so I thought I would not have trouble making the 6-7 Nm I wanted to cover.  The wind was supposed to drop to a dead calm and then switch to the south just in time for my return trip.  I took several pictures around the marker 71 area (of cabins on the spoil islands and of Nighthawk bay behind the spoil islands).   I got some more pictures around marker 79 (one of my favorite lunch stops) and finally finished up with pictures in the marker 87 area of North Bird Island and the spoil islands leading down toward the Bird Island Basin boat channel.  As usual as I turned for home the wind did not die and in fact seemed to increase against me.  Just before I finished up the 13.7 Nm trip it finally dropped to less than 5 mph.  At least putting the kayak on top of the car was easy even if the paddle back was not.

No barges today. Just one tugboat.
Nice captain slowed to reduce wake for me
When not pushing the barges they look so top-heavy that they might just turn over.

Cormorants and White Pelicans

These were on the Nighthawk Bay side of the spoil islands at the marker 71 entrance

.

A Cedar windbreak remains though cabin is gone.
Pier and state license number remain
A few of the spoil islands have these Cedar stands that must have been planted by cabin owners

The "Double Hump" spoil island at marker 79
Cabins are on either ends of the trees.
The unusual shape marks one of the best lunch stops. It has a good beach and shade for hot days

North Bird Island in Nighthawk Bay.
The island is that dark line in middle of picture
None of the island is more than 2 ft above water, but it is still a major tern/gull nesting site

Dunes on back side of Padre Island

These are on east shore of Nighthawk bay across from the bay entrance at marker 65.

Three of the older fishing cabins

These face the Intracoastal at marker 71.

One of the newer cabins near marker 77
Pier is not quite as new as cabin
This spoil island is in a more natural state with no trees or even bushes

The view south from Marker 87.
Islands on right are across from South Bird Island
There is a nice landing spot and entrance to Nighthawk about where the fishing boat is anchored.

.

The view North in Nighthawk Bay.
Nighthawk is about 7 x 0.5 Nm and 0.5 - 3 ft deep
You can just make out the houses about 5 Nm away at the north end of the bay
