A bad day on the Intracoastal turns out ok  -  March 4, 2005

I decided to paddle about 6 miles south down the Intracoastal Canal from the JFK bridge to get some pictures to finish up my virtual tour page for the area.  I launched on the edge of Packery Channel into almost calm winds.  At the JFK bridge I turned south into the Intracoastal and paddled past the marina and new fishing pier.  Just south of the pier I stopped to take a picture of the interesting reflection of one of the day markers.  I was surprised to find an osprey sitting on the pole with a seagull.  I enjoyed the trip south with almost no wind, but was slowed a little by the north flowing current.  I got some pictures of a tug with a 2x2 barge tow and just a little later was passed by one with a 3x2 barge tow.   Just after passing the Whitecap entrance (a little over 2 Nm south of the bridge) I noticed my key pocket was unzipped and there were no keys inside.  I raced back to the car in a state of despair.  Amazingly I found the keys 1 in from the spot where I sat the kayak down.  After a quick lunch I made the short run up to the end of Packery Channel to see the status of the dredging operations.  A good start, a bad middle, and a great end to a days paddle.

Launching on Packery just east of Intracoastal
Good launch for 1 or 2 kayaks but not for a group
You save 2.5 Nm launching here instead of at Packery Channel Park

They take up most of the channel and you have to get well off to the side

Only a few hundred feet separate the new Packery Channel from the Gulf

Packery Channel is one of the best areas for seeing birds

Flight of Cormorants

You usually do not get to see them flying in formation

I think it just circled around and landed back on the marker after I left

The barges pass pretty close to you

You realize how big they really are when you see the people working on them

It is needed to protect the channel but it has ruined one of our popular group launch sites

American Oystercatchers
Oystercatchers are one of my favorite birds
They might be making a nesting area on this little bit of shell beach
