Bay Surfing with a Visitor From Germany  -  Feb. 10, 2005

Juan Luis (who helped design the Mayan Seas kayaks) was visting from Germany where he was going to graduate school.  I was joining him, Ken, and Tim for a paddle in Corpus Christi Bay.  As we were getting ready to launch it was apparent that it was going to be a windy day and hopefully a chance for some surfing in the bay.  As we got to the breakwater entrance I tried to land and take some pictures as the guys surfed from just outside the breakwater back into the protected area.  I could not find a good place to land on the breakwater so I had to try to take the pictures out of the kayak.  After a few shots we headed NE directly into the 20 mph wind and out onto the bay.  It quickly became apparent that I was quite a bit slower than the other guys.  Finally Ken slipped back and paddled with me as Tim and Juan Luis steadily increased the separation between us.  They stopped at the edge of the ship channel and waited for us to catch up.  I suggested we surf back to the marina and then they could go out for a 2nd run at their own pace.  Surfing the 2-4 ft waves back I managed to hold my own and caught a couple of good rides.  They turned and headed back out into the bay while I made a series of short runs in and out right at the breakwater entrance.  I actually got my best ride of the day right at the entrance.  I paddled back along the protected side of the breakwater to the launch and a few minutes after I landed Ken, Tim, and Juan Luis arrived.  Tim was really excited as he had ridden his biggest wave todate.  There was some nice surfing although it was not the best I have had in the bay.  I will have to work on my paddling speed so that I wil not have to be left behind again.

The waves were a little too closely spaced to catch a good ride

It was a lot calmer on the inside than on the outside

The tide was high and the waves were throwing lots of white spray over the rocks.

Surfing really takes it out of you. Maybe he was just too tired to get out.

I usually only get pictures of a calm bay, but this is probably a more normal condition for the bay.

Unless I can get my paddling speed up this is going to be the only view I get of these guys

The Breakwater Rocks

I always find the textures and shadings of the rocks interesting.
